Antares Region taken at SPSP

This is my image of the Antares Region in Scorpius taken at the SPSP.

A combination of -
11 x 90sec at 1600 ISO
5 x 90sec at 800 ISO

Total of 24 min exposure using a Canon lens set @ 54mm f/2.8 using the Canon 20Da piggyback tracked on the Orion Sky View Pro Mount.
In Camera Noise Reduction and live focus mode used.

Processing was done in Images Plus using (12 sub flats) master flat frame and level adjustments in Photoshop CS2.
It's the first time I haven't used Neat Image for noise reduction.

Some detail and colour has been lost due to image reduction for the forum.
I can upload a larger version if anyone is interested.

Hi Andrew

That is a very nice wide field shot of the region! Well done.

I have found that the noise reduction software doesn't work that well with this type of wide field shot. It introduces too many artifacts and removes too many stars, so I totally agree with your decision not to use it.

That lens seems to behave fairly well too. A little chromatic aberation but nothing too damaging. I assume that it is not the 18-55mm kit lens as you have said that it is f2.8. Am I correct?

Now for every one out there, the temperature at which these images were taken was just above 3 deg C with a wind chill factor as well . I wonder how much noise was also reduced due to that fact?

Quite a bit. These cameras perform VERY well at low temperatures. It's just that we don't

Tony the lens I used was the Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 set at 54mm.
An awesome lens for normal terrestrial imaging and good for astro.
I also used the Lumicon Minus Violet filter to help with CA.
I followed your instructions on applying flats in this post you made.

I want a 20Da and your swag full of lenses ! Awesome, looks even better than on the back of the camera . See field composition makes a huge difference doesn't it Andrew, to get the antares colour and the dust lanes joining up. Worth the trouble !

Mate would be awesome to "borrow" the camera and lens to take to Qld Astrofest. Scorpio will be directly overhead there!! Mind you I might get lost coming home though

It is not a good shot, it is a stunning image! Shows a lot of planning and careful execution. Processing must have been difficult with such a large dynamic range that you have bought up very well.
