17mm Nagler

Finally,

Picked up my 17 mm TV Nagler 4. Ordered it in June, so nearly six months wait.

Something to do with none being available in Aus and being such a popular eyepiece.

Now have to wait for Melb skies to clear, hopefully only one more sleep.

So sorry to all wanting to view tonight, I might have caused more clouds.

Nice EP Rod, I sold my Ethos set in favour of the Type 4's, they just suit my eyes better.

I'll chime in too - both the 17mm and 12mm type 4s are my favorite eyepieces. I do like the view through the ethos, but not enough to trade off the eye relief of the Naglers.

Had first light with the 17mm Nag last night. I am very, very impressed. Just like all the TV range, this has that WOW factor built in. Clear and precise, with a dark sky background and explicit detail. Jupiter was fantastic, it was either a very clear viewing night or a very good eyepiece, especially when used with the 2X Powermate. The bands, colour and red spot were awesome. Orion neb, Tarantula neb and several other messier objects all hunted down with fantastic results. Added the OIII and both nebs bloomed out of the sky.
I love my 10mm Ethos and 12mm Nag, but this one just shot to first place. The only down side is the weight. At 725 gms it is by far the heaviest eyepiece I have, and when combined with the powermate, puts a real strain on the scope balance.
But all in all a great eyepiece, which just about completes my set (but I'll probably capitulate and get another next year )

I have 3 Naglers
A 21 year old Type 1 13 mm
Type 6 11 mm
Type 4 17 mm and I love the all.
The type 4 17mm is a magnificent eyepiece
When used with a 2"UHF filter on PN's or Bright or dark nebula the view is a sight to behold

Yep, I'd agree with that totally. My 17mm Nagler is a gem and the 12mm is the one I reach for when looking for galaxies, with the 9 and 7 and 5mm type 6's for a closer look. The generous eye relief is one reason I went for the type 4's, much more comfortable viewing. Haven't looked through an Ethos yet, I'm not sure I want to. It's going to cost a packet to upgrade if I try one. I must resist the temptation!!!

I just read that TV's next Delos EP will be a 17mm. Soon you will be able to have Ethos type quality views at a Nagler price with 20mm of eye relief too.
Definitely on my wish list for next year.

I don't have a 17mm T4, but I DO have a 12mm Nagler Type 4 and I LOVE that eyepiece! Many people complain about black outs, but it is just a matter of training your eye....no problem for me!
