Registax: stacking more than 1000 images

Hi folks,

I have 1045 frames that I want to stack with Registax but it won't load that many at once. I can only load in about 450 at a time.

What would be the best way to process all 1045 frames in Registax.

Would I do a basic stack and no processing on 450 frames at a time and then recombine the resulting images at the end with wavelet processing.

Or, would I do the processing on the groups of 450 and then just stack the resulting images at the end with no processing.

Does it even make a difference??

What do other people do when stacking large numbers of frames in Registax?

cheers,
Andrew

I've never had trouble stacking that amount of frames. I have trouble at 2200 & over though. Is this an AVI your trying to load in?

I have to load the frames in a batch because Registax won't load the AVI as it is from Adobe Premiere. I assume it is a codec thing. I use Virtualdub to save the AVI as individual frames.

Middy, if you haven't already tried, just open the avi in Virtual Dub and then "save as avi" and run the saved one. Whenever something doesn't run in registax for me this seems to do the trick.

cheers,

I had the same kind of trouble with a kodak camera. I ended up using bink & smacker to convert the footage to AVI & then load into registax.

I'm not clued up enough to help you out with your problem though. Someone here will be able to I bet.

I was using Bink and Smacker at first until I realised that it was reducing my image size by half. My original footage is standard PAL resolution (720 x 576) and Bink and Smacker was outputing 360 x 288 images. That was when I switched to VirtualDub.

Ditto to what Robert T said, do a Save As Avi in Virtual Dub to get a Registax friendly Avi.

I use Virtual Dub to export the frames as BMP files, and then I drag those BMP files into registax. I've had over 5000 frames loaded using this method.

The reason I do this is because I do some pre-processing of the BMP's, including using ppmcentre to centre the object in the frame, crop the frame and rank based on quality. That way it's quicker and easier for registax to handle the smaller frames, and you can easily discard the bad quality frames before you get to registax.

It adds some time to a normal planetary image processing routine, but I've got it scripted now so I just set it to run through all of my avi's and come back in an hour or two when it's finished.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I will try 'Save as AVI' in VirtualDub.

It also seems like nobody else has problems loading in large numbers of frames. If I select 500 or more BMP images and try to open them, nothing gets loaded and Registax just sits there. Oh well, I will investigate further when I get time.

Oh, I had that problem.

Don't use the "Open" dialog - just drag and drop them from Windows Explorer into registax, and it works fine then.

Hi all,

I tried 'save as AVI' in VirtualDub and this worked when importing the first couple of AVI's into Registax, then when I tried a large AVI it choked just near the end with a 'can't decode this frame' or some such error.

I then tried the drag and drop method with a stack of BMP images and that worked a treat.

Thanks everyone for all the help
