Android phone users....

I thought that I'd put this here in general chat because you may not venture to the mobile apps forum as much as iOS users.

You've now been given a proper astronomy app...

Southern Stars releases SkySafari for Android - public beta:

I guess that more will now follow, and that's good news.

Yes good news, although I do like Skeye for Astro, does a great job as a DSC too... Haven't controlled a scope with it yet though.

Thanks Chris.
on my HTC Desire I already use SkEye and Google Sky but I'll have a look at SkySafari.

EDIT: I just went and had a read about it and the Free Beta test version is time-limited, and will stop working after December 31st, 2011. Then it 'may' be available for purchase.
I'm not interested in buying apps when there are so many free ones out there that I am already happy with, but thanks anyway Chris.

No probs Ken - just a heads up. It shouldn't be overlooked it though... it blows away what you guys already have by a monstrous margin. It's not as though it'll cost $200 when it goes commercial - the base version will only be a few measlies - and worth every penny ten-fold. This app is of the quality that Android users haven't yet been privileged to access. In reference to "free", I guess that you really do get what you pay for.

Androids using phones....what's the world coming to!!!

Seriously, though, looks like a good bit of kit to add to your app collection.

Yeah probably only about $20 or so.

The free ones I use are quite good actually, but in reality I hardly ever use them anyway
I just don't have a need for them.

But the SkySafari will probably be good for people that use stuff like that

I've used some of the free night sky apps (google sky and another I can't remember the name of), and while they look good thy run too slow on my little htc wildfire to be much use.

I'll have to check out the new app and see if that one works any better.

Cheers
