Somerset Sunrise 27th December

After the Comet faded into the dawn sky, we ( Shelley, Jason and myself) drove down to the upper reaches of Lake Somerset, in search of a spot close to the water.
It was a little slippery getting down to the lakes edge, and after skidding my way down, I warned them both "Safety First" and 100 points to Shell for her quick off the cuff "Harness" come back.

I had a great time this morning, thanks you two, it's always better to share these moments with friends.

Oh, and all images are straight from the camera. Apart from the one of Shell and Jase.

Just beautiful Nettie. The colour transition from one to the next is sublime.

Another damned Mamiya. There goes the piggy bank.

Lovely images, Jeanette. What an amazing time of day that is.

w00t w00t, go the RB67. What lens is that on the RB?

I'm about to splurge on the 50mm with the floating element. Going broke, quickly. Just bought a spare 120 back and the dual cable release (mirror lockup and shutter release in one). So expensive. :S

This morning, I was looking up digital backs...

Nettie, that chant is potent. You post yourselves chanting and the MP4 disappears???

I'm not sure you should be posting it in the comet thread, lest you make the COMET disappear!

Digital backs, oh no it's all over for you! The lens actually is the 50mm with floating element, quite a nice lens - I actually didn't realise they made a 50mm equivalent for the RZ's? I thought they only did 65mm's as the widest, but I must be mistaken and I hope I am incase I happen to.. ermm.. aquire an RZ one day.

Mate the RB stuff is real cheap 2nd hand, it's the main reason I went for this instead of the RZ (as well as everything being 100% mechanical just being fun!). Here's a list of all the stuff I got for less than $1000 AUD inc. shipping from the states using keh.com:

-RB67 Pro-SD Body as seen here (with neck strap, front/rear caps etc)
-Waistlevel viewfinder
-Metered prism viewfinder (though I use a separate meter)
-2 x 120 film backs
-50mm C lens
-127mm KL lens

All in very good condition. Some scuff marks etc, nothing on anything that matters. Glass is all fine. I think these things have just been around for that long they're fairly easy to come by, I really don't think a better deal can be had for a start in medium format. Problem is now I want moar.

I love this thing.. as you know they're built as if they should be weapons!

Hi Jason,

Ah-hah! Excellent that you're using the 50mm. Would love to see your scans.

What film are you using? I've just been gorging on Velvia 50. I'm dying to do some portraiture so have ordered another back to stick some Astia (I'm buying the last remaining stock on eBay) and probably some XP2+.

I thought about going the RB route, but, had some money to throw around so got the RZ.

It's almost impossible to find the AE finder on eBay. I will give KEH a poke.

Also, is that a Lee holder system? I handhold mine. Are good quality polarisers available for those gorgeous lenses? All my 35mm stuff is typically shot with a polariser.

And, yes, there is an RZ-specific 50mm UL-D lens. I can also use the vast majority of the RB lenses, too. The RZ 50mm floating element lens gets such great reviews, I have to have it. After that will be the 180mm f/4.

There are two 50mm and 65mm versions for the RZ. Both with and without floating elements. The stuff I've seen with the 50mm UL-D is crazy beautiful. All their lenses have such pleasing bokeh, too.

As for digital backs, a 33 megapixel Sinar is up on eBay for $6.5K at the moment... I'm crying.

Cheers for the heads up, Jase. Appreciate it.

H

Here are some of the RB images mate, I only got it in September, and still have about a dozen rolls of film to scan and upload etc.

http://www.redbubble.com/people/oosh.../mamiya?page=1

I shoot pretty much only Velvia 50 also. Got some B&W done on a recent trip, but the lab ruined the negs so I've got nothing. Got some ektar to try, some efke 25, and some pan f+ sitting in the fridge.

KEH is a great site mate, especially for mamiya stuff!

Yep it's a Lee holder, and it actually has a 105mm polariser hanging off a front ring that goes on the filter holder in that photo, pretty much is always on there. That's awesome to hear the RZ has the 50mm's then... I'm sure the optics are much improved. I'm currenly not that happy with my scans, would like a bit sharper. Using a V700 flatbed and a custom film holder, but want moar!

That's actually a pretty bloody good price for that kinda digi back... that must be tempting.

Look forward to seeing some of your RZ stuff

Superb photography, my friend. Love them all. So much fine detail.

I'll scope out the B+W. Can it be used without a holder system? Got my eyes on a V750 or a 9000, too.

What a money pit. lol.

Sweet thanks mate - I still would like sharper, but I'm just greedy. I think LF really is the next logical step.

The polariser (as with all 105mm polarisers to my knowledge) are designed specifically to mount on the front of holders and things like this. B+W make plenty of quality filters as I'm sure you know already, but of course the best thing about using this is that you don't need to worry about different lenses having different thread sizes and henceforth needing a filter for each size. I'm assuming there's a reason you don't like the holders? you prefer just to hold it infront for quick-ness and less assembly before you shoot? FYI I know a few people are discouraged by the holders when they want to shoot really wide - they're worried about vignetting, but it's all in the setup. I can shoot at 10mm (16mm 35mm equiv) with 3 filter slots in use and the polariser on the front without any issues!

The V700 or 750 will do you wonders. The only advantage as far as I know with the 750 is that you can wet mount your negs, though everyone I've spoken with doesn't seem to think it makes a huge difference.. however I'm sure it must else they wouldn't have created another middle just for that. Is the 9000 the canon scanner?

edit: Damn sorry for the thread takeover JJJ! Was completely unintentional... but we blame you for posted the pic of my RB and getting us all worked up on a gadget rant.

ANYWAY, back to Jeanette's beautiful photos...

GORGEOUS shots J, the morning turned out so good, couldn't have asked for better weather! (well, maybe the clewds could have buggered off for a bit longer). My favourite is definitely no. 2, stunning colour and the reflections look so nice!

LOL at that ridiculous vest with the Mamiya in the foreground, it makes me look really fat but it's the 17 pockets filled with filters and batteries and goodness knows what else. A shower cap...plastic bags...

"Safety first" was definitely key LOL. Soooo many laughs!

So glad I got to share this amazing morning with J and Jase

J, where are you ripple shots from the fish and the turtles? And the catfox?

Steve is a bro, he'll understand.

Can I just add, Jeanette, that those images would make fabulous canvas prints.

I love them.

It worked.

I'm now $500 poorer. lol.

Just grabbed the AE finder/prism, magnifying eyecup and the automatic winder.

I didn't dare go to the lens section.
