Mobile broadband and Outlook

I think I really already know the answer to this, but could someone please advise me if I can set up to get emails via my outlook 2007 using the temporary mobile broadband connection? I am thinking not, but someone I know reckons you can. But without an official email address, there does not seem to be any way to set up outlook to receive messages. My email address/service for my new provider is not activated as yet as they are in the process of taking the adsl codes back from bigpong, provisioning I think is their term for the process. I can get emails addressed to my new address by going to their site and logging in to my webmail, but I think that is it really. I suppose my new email address is a Claytons address, the one you have when you don't have one, as it were Webmail is very limited which is a pain.

Your new ISP may or may not run secure imap and secure smtp, side by side with webmail. Some do, Some don't.
Try using these server settings for outlook and see if it works.
You may need to set up a new account to use imap.

Incoming mail - mail.yourisp.com - imaps (ssl) – port number 993 – requires username/password
Outgoing mail – mail.yourisp.com – ssmtp (ssl) – port number 465 – requires username/password

If it works, imap leaves the mail on the server so it's like using webmail from outlook or an ipad.

If you already have a mailbox and can read mails via webmail at the new ISP, I can't see any reason why you can't get your log-in credentials (username/password) for the new ISP and using POP3 in Outlook to get your mails to your 'puter from the new ISP's POP3 mailserver - obviously you should be able to send out emails via the temporary mobile broadband connection using their SMTP (outgoing mailserver) unless they don't have one.
Who is the mobile broadband with?

In summary:
Receive incoming mail - POP3 - yournewISP.mailserver.hostname
Outgoing sending email - SMTP - yourmobilebroadband.smtp.hostname
(just as an example if it is Telstra then use mail.bigpond.com)

Thanks all, just rang my new ISP and they confirm it cannot be done until I am physically connected to them. Thus far damn bigpong still have yet to release the ADSL2+ codes, and I am knackered until this happens. What a bunch of cretins.

Sorry to hear that Peter - ie your new ISP not willing to assist you by allowing you to send/receive thru their mailservers even though they are assured that you ARE a customer

The fact that the ADSL provisioning is not completed yet DOES NOT mean that you cannot by other means use their mailservers IF you for example use such as a internet mobile connection dongle!! Of course this "refusal" boils down to their business policy from my point of view (may be incorrect though they might have other reasons!)

Anyway I used to own an ISP business here in Perth and I used to be "co-operative" (or politically correct term is "customer-friendly") to my customers' needs - but then that's me!

Good luck Peter - yeah unfortunately you've gotta wait till Telstra clears "the codes" -(it's only because of red tape that it takes so long!) off your line number before the other ISP can get theirs on for you - YMMV

Thanks Bill, yeah just not being very cooperative methinks. Mind you the guy I spoke to I think found it all too hard to comprehend. At least with this provider, I get locals when I call and not someone who knows bugger all in Manilla. Really Telstra have to lift their game

Get a new ISP, what you ask for is absolutely basic functionality. It is not that it cant be done, it is that they dont want to do it. Sounds more like they are the ones who are going to screw you over more than Telstra.

I am back up and running on ADSL2+ now getting good speeds which is more that I can say I was getting with bigpong. Thanks for the suggestions people
