It's been nearly a decade since I have visited my old haunts among Sydney's Blue mountains. This weekend an opportunity presented itself to spend a day up there with no reason to hurry for any deadlines so I took it.

the same thing happened to me last Christmas. I had my camera (flash attached) sitting on the coffee table when my 1 year old son decided to yank the strap. Hot Shoe snapped off. You would think they could at least design the flash to be the weakest point.

Still, well done on the Lyrebird, I've seen them in the wild on occasion but have never been able to actually get a shot in time.

Lucky for me I have the 5DII and the top of the camera is stronger than the bottom of the flash. I'd rather have a broken flash than a broken camera.

Love the little finch. Beautiful. Colour temperature on the first and third feels a little cool? So the 100-400L delivered?

About colour temp...

It's hard to get it right. I know it was in shade, but when I select shade in the WB (RAW) it doesn't look right. When I use the eyedropper tool to pick a white, black or grey area, sometimes it looks right, other times it doesn't.

Sometimes I resort to colour temp sliders instead. My monitor is calibrated with the Spyder III.

Most of the time it is more by feel than it is by presets and numbers.

Yes, I've found the temp presets for shade/cloud etc come out too warm for my liking. Sometimes I use them as a start, then maybe cool it down a bit from there if I'm feeling lazy. Really should shoot a WhiBal card on location, then the eyedropper should be spot on. But I always forget to do that unless I've made plans.

I've been using a WhiBal for several years now. I find that it leaves my images looking clinically sterile. That is, it's just too perfect. I prefer warmth in my portraits. But, for mixed lighting scenarios, it is a godsend.

Yeah, that's kinda what I do. Whibal card, then slightly warm to taste, add seasoning and serve with greens.

I like the waterfall, it has a very surreal look to it.
