Has anyone viewed or imaged the Sun today?

Ye gods... I've just been to Bintel this morning where Mike and Don threw a Coronado 60mm out the front door for a spot of spot viewing. Spots schmots.

Forget the spot viewing and check out the biggest prominence I've ever seen at around the 3:00 o'clock mark. It would have to be at least a sixth of a solar diameter long, if not more. What a monster!!!

Would someone with a planetary cam or else PLEASE image it today and post it up here on IIS!!!!!!

Someone has already posted Chris:

Is it possible to see this sort of thing with a normal scope plus solar
filter, or do you need a dedicated Ha type solar scope?

Cheers,
Jason.

You need either a Ha scope or Ha filter & blocking filter on a normal scope. A Meade PST or Lunt 35mm scope are the minimum cost/entry level for seeing prominences at the Sun's limb (also called filaments when over the Sun's disc) and other disc features.

That is quite an interesting prom - thanks for the heads up Chris.

Seems that Mercury and Venus are going to cop this lot. A bit of disappointment for our friends who image Aurora.

hi chris
i was looking at it at around 7.30am and yes it was a monster the best i'd seen since owning my scope.... come back from cricket with the kids and there's only a slight remanence of it being there...looks like a short large flare and was lucky enough to see it.....
