Sunrise and, well, some more birds

Here are some recent photos from the bushland of Strangways. Sunrise from our front verandah and I'm afraid some more birds. I don't get obsessed!

So the birds are Black-shouldered Kite, Buff-rumped Thornbill, Square-tailed Kite (the bird that got me into this particular obsession in the first place), Rufous Whistler, White-eared Honeyeater and White-winged Chough.

Hi Paddy,

A superb collection of bird life – you are really putting that L glass through its paces!

Cheers

Dennis

re sun rise

well done Paddy!

these are great!,the colours of the sunrise are amazing!

The square tailed kite capture is of particular note-these are rare raptors. They travel vast distances on the wing to raid birds nests, they are sometimes called 'inland albartross' as their wing span is very long and the glide around, with not much wing beats.

Hope you see these again and get more captures-Chris

Thanks Dennis and Chris. The Square-tailed Kites are actually nesting on a neighbouring property and did so last season. I found them quite accidentally on a walk - one of the chicks had been evicted from the nest and was stranded on the ground. It was successfully rehabilitated after we got it to a wildlife shelter, which was how we found out it's identity. There are thought to be 50 pairs in Victoria, so we feel very privileged to have them here. I borrowed my father-in-law's Nikon DSLR last season to photograph them and was so impressed I ended up buying my Canon. My last SLR was an Olympus OM-1 bought in 1981. Anyway, there will be more photos of this family to come! Had the male perfectly in focus for a BIF photograph this morning only to realise that the camera was still set on self timer from a photo last night. How can I convey the frustration of no action when pressing the shutter button with the bird in the centre of the viewfinder only to get 4 photos of the ground 2 seconds later?
