6 " travel scope

We do a bit of camping and my 12" dob while certainly fits in the wagon it does hog a bit of room , so why not a small portable scope and I fit in the blow up boats to !

Most Of the scope is finished now save putting it together so heres a few pics.

I hope the single pole truss works out its fairly light up top and I'm planning on a small helical focuser so weight wise it shoudn't get much
heavier.

Stiction on both motions may be a little light for teflon so I'm playing with a little velcro and felt for now.

The secondary spider is from an old orion 8" , I've cut and repinned the pivots on it to suit a smaller primary and drilled some weight out of the
hub as 1/2" brass is a bit overdone.

The mirror cell is 1/2" ply , the mirror will sit on a ring of velcro at the
60 % zone and probably have three edge / centering supports which will barely touch the mirror itself.

Its been a lot of fun so far and I've even repeated mistakes from
my first scope .

1 ..measure and think before you cut

2.. mark out ALL the angles and lines you need for complete assembly
of all componants ( sometimes you cant do this half way through )

3.. consider how the said marked angles and lines fit into the componant assembly , there not much good on the inside or upside down were you can't use em , eh graham ?

This scope i thought being smaller would take less time to put together
well thats not realyl the case it seems similar to the 12".
tools are pretty minimalist though a cordless drill and a dodgey jigsaw
probably dont really scream workshop but they are enough to get the job done .

I keep getting the urge to make a 'Pack Down' scope in the 6" range. I've seen some designs that end up being all self contained in the base unit. Handy if you want to travel light but powerful enough to be useful. The PortaBowl idea is another version or option.
If I can pick up a cheap 6" mirror or old newt I wil give it a go, I like the idea of designing something with a goal in mind. In the meantime the little 80mm Achro is my grab and go.
Cute wee design, well done, I like the concept.

Looks good. I'd be interested to hear how it goes.

Andrew

PS Point 1 seems to be a constant problem for me...
