Thumbs up Sydney at Dawn – Artificial Light Partially Eclipses Natural Light

Without being too deep and philosophical, in this image I’ve captured Natural and Artificial Light together, with the Moon being partially eclipsed by the lamp post. Unfortunately for those of us living in or near the city, artificial light dominates the night sky and it’s all but impossible to see any stars.

This image was taken on the morning of the 18th May 2011 when the Full Moon was setting in the West, and is part of the Sydney at Dawn series, where I feature some pre-dawn and dawn images captured during the month of May 2011.

As I was wandering around the harbour foreshore, the lamp post and the Full Moon together caught my eye and I was able to show this Natural and Artificial Light together.

Larger version on my blog:
Sydney at Dawn – Artificial Light Partially Eclipses Natural Light

Captured with a Canon 40D and 24-105mm lens @105mm, f/9.0, 1/125s exposure @ ISO320. Processed in Lightroom and Photoshop.

What’s your night sky like? Comments and feedback welcome!

Very different Mike, well planned I'm sure, quite like it though, the Moon can be very handy at time.

Very nice Mike, but I think you could be excused for cloning out the aeroplane(s). (Go on, you know you want to).

Thanks guys.

There's a bird there too, Al. I thought about cloning them out - I guess I wish the bird was a bit more visible in a slightly different spot - would add to it.

The colours are great imo. And the positioning of the moon wrt the lamp is certainly noteworthy.

I agree about the aircraft though. There appears 2 of them close to each other and rapidly attracted my attention to this rather than the lovelly image.

Darrin...

Thanks Dave, Brad and Darrin.

Alright I'll try with the aircraft magically gone and see if it makes it better.
