Recommend any Multi CPU/Multi thread video conversion software

Hi all,

I recently upgraded my computer, and i'm looking at some decent video converter/encoder software.
I'm after a multi CPU/Multi thread type, and i need it to handle a heap of threads.
I have a 4 socket CPU 10 core each (40 cores, 80 threads), so a 6 thread or so aint gong to be effecient in my machine. I need to load it up with 80 threads, and the ones i've seen dont do more than 12 threads.
My CPU's are Xeons E7-4850 and the systems running Server 2008.

From what i read, it does CUDA, but i need raw cpu threads..

That sounds like a beast of a machine!

I encode video on my GPU a simple ATI 6970. As it has circa 1,500 processing units - it's kinda designed to handle video conversion much faster than real time.

The latest Catalyst drivers for the card come with add-ons one being the freely bundled ATI video converter (that can up and downscale as well as change most formats into every other format).

Bigasoft have a converter that might utilise your CPU more, mine isn't heavily loaded when I do conversion becuase the GPU does all the heavy lifting.

I'd be interested to know how an 40 core / 80 thread monster competes against a high end GPU. I certainly wouldn't expect it to beat a dual GPU card - or two or three operating in parallel. I'd imagine a 3 way set up of dual GPU cards (Nvidia 590 or ATI 6990) giving you 6 GPU cores running almost 9,000 threads would eat anything. I know some guys created a dual Xeon quad Nvidia GPU beastie and it does near real time tomography (3 d X-ray / MRI / CT composition of a human body). Something that a few years ago workstation level hardware took almost a day to do can be done in a little over a minute.

You have four physical CPUs?

I have a Dell R910 with 4 CPU's. Each CPU has 10 cores, and 20 threads each.
CPU's are better suited to certain things as is the GPU's. I have a HD 5670, and that gives me good enough graphics as well as GPU power.
But i use Electronics CAD and simulation which the GPU's dont do too well.
I get over 33,000 in PassMark 7 benchmarks with 64 threads (It wont recognize anymore over this number, so its pretty fast.
I convert Bluray to MKV and also from one to another format from time to time for video, bu i mainly use it for electronic simulation design and manufacture.

Theo, that's a virtualisation machine. It should be running vmware with a dozen or more servers under that. You'll never stress that thing as a simple workstation. Keep an eye on the electricity bill

Actually its only drawing 404 watts most of the time, and peaks at 600 watts when getting stressed.
But your right, i just cant get it to get all cores up except when doing bench testing. But it blitzes my electronic designs, like filters and analog simulations. Plus i have a 3kW solar system, so im getting free power anyway..

NI Multisim loves the new speed ... What used to take a few minutes to complete, now takes a few seconds.
Of course it can run hundreds of VM's at once, but i got it for other reasons.
Actually a fast gamer too !. Too bad the PCIe slot is only half length.

Well one learn new things everyday -have'nt seen a Server 2008 platform with that 4 x Xeons being used for gaming before!

Its not a gamer, n ever meant it to be. But it can if needed.
Dont know the slots Robin... It has quite a few of them. It has 1x16, 4x8 and 2x4 sPCIe slots. Have my Soundblaster F-Fi extreme plugged, and with the HD5670, breezes thru all my video editing.
Only has 4 NIC's installed, which is 2 more than a regular PC, and NO i dont have a fibre linc NIC either..
I specifically had it built to how i wanted it and it just fly's.

But back to the subject, any decent multi thread video converters/encoders ?, ive tried so many, and i only got one thread to 100%.
I have 79 more threads left doing bugger all !.

I thought those things had 4 * 1,100 Watt power supplies - so needed like a 20 amp power supply?

Damn nice kit if you need CPU cycles!

Yes, they have 1100W supplies, but im not using a squillion NIC cards and a kazillion Drives, so power consumption is way under 1000W, and like i said, im drawing no more than 800w if i abuse the power scheme.
I only have 2x high capacity 2.5 drives running RAID 0 and the HD5670 which draws 70w max. Plus the RAM is the newer 1.35V lower power RAM.
Have to admit, sounds like a jet taking off when you first cold boot it, but drops down to near nothing once running. The cooling is amazing.
Its actually quieter than my old computer system, and i need to lower the sound from my TV to listen to the fans.

I use sorenson squeeze, not sure if there are any cheap programs on windows that will use that many threads, writing for parallelism is hard, the only program I have ever had that maxes out all my cores properly is 3DStudio Max.

Under other OSs there is more choice. I use a bunch of processing apps under Linux that are heavily threaded, I'll ask around and see if there are any video converters.
What specific format do you mostly transcode from->to?

I convert Bluray to AVI, and MKV and WMV etc..

Plus i upscale to 1920x1080 as well. So a bit of everything.
