Help – MS Outlook 2003 Mail to iMac

Hello,

My wife got an Apple iMac (desktop) and the task of migrating her MS Outlook e-mail, contacts, calendar, archives, etc has been added to my “honey do” list.

MS Oulook is part of the Office Professional 2003 Suite and we have the latest Lion OS on the iMac.

Is there an easy way to do this? I have searched for O2M but it appears that this application is no longer available?

Thanks!

Dennis

PS – I have exported/imported from Outlook Express to Outlook previously but that was straightforward as both are MS products!

There is a Windows migration assistant built into Lion.

Thanks for that Peter, I appreciate your reply and it did look promising when I read about it in the Mac literature.

However, when I ran the application, after getting through the first few screens it just seemed to remain in an “active” but “wait state” and nothing happened for some 15 mins, even thought I could navigate to the Windows PC from the Mac and the Mac could “see” the various Folders on that Windows PC, so I just stopped the Migration Assistant application.

I may give it another try, just in case….this is our 1st Mac and I may still be Mac illiterate!

Cheers

Do you know if her email connects to the server via POP or IMAP?

If it's IMAP then all you'll need to do is open up mail on the mac, input her IMAP server details and it'll all be there. If it's POP then there are a couple of methods, but they're not as easy as it should be.

Check out this site, it should point you in the right direction:

Give it another try, it can take quite some time.

Hi Guys

Thanks for all your help. MS Outlook 2003 is POP.

The (native OS) Migration Assistant on the Mac seems to be working okay and it is displaying the “pass code” to enter into the (downloaded) Migration Assistant on the Win XP SP3 Notebook.

The Mac can “see” the Win PC but Win Explorer cannot “see” the Mac, although I have a CISCO network utility on the Win PC and it can see the Win PC and the Mac.

I have turned off the Win PC Firewall, Norton’s IS and disabled Windows Update on the Win PC as well as shared all the Folders I was able to.

The Migration Assistant on the Win PC just sits there looking for a connection to the Mac whereas the Mac discovers the Win PC and tells me to type in the “pass code” on the Win PC, which is just thrashing away looking for the Mac..

Oh well, I’ll keep trying, I’m sure it’s a dumb operator thing somewhere!

Cheers

You may need to allow file sharing on the iMac. Go into the System Preferences and then in the "Internet and Wireless" section there is a "Sharing" icon which will let you share various parts of your iMac.

If you get stuck there is a good amount of help about, just google "imac file sharing with windows" or similar and you should get a lot of info.

HTH,
Simon

Thanks for that Simon – I can now see the Mac from the Win XP PC and browse the folders, including the Application Folder so I will have to re-set that stuff once I have finished.

However, the Win XP PC is still thrashing and “waiting for connection” so I’ll keep peeling back the layers of ignorance until I get there. Methinks I might have to get something like MAC OS for Dummies if such a book exists.

I really appreciate you guys stopping by and helping me!

Cheers

Okay – here is what I have discovered…Migration Assistant on a Win XP SP3 PC appears to be broken – it just hangs waiting for the Mac to connect!

See the following discussions on Apple Support Communities

XP SP3 Never Responds to Migration Assistant Authentication Request

How do I get Windows Migration Assistant to connect?

Cheers

Strewth – what a palava!

I finally managed to migrate the Outlook 2003 Mail and Address Book across to the iMac.

I had to go via the somewhat tortuous route of MS Outlook 2003 ==>> Outlook Express ==>> Thunderbird on the source PC, before then importing into Mac Mail on the target machine.

I tried USB, Firewire and Ethernet and almost reverted to pencil and paper!

What a big let down that the Apple Migration Assistant proved to quite an un-assistant!:

Cheers
