Melbourne Moon Tonight

Quarter moon clearly shining over Melbourne tonight, but there is a large and clear silver ring visible around it. I remember reading somewhere that it has to do with upper atmosphere temperatures.

Can anyone explain it further or correct me?

Rod

Sounds like you've seen a halo. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halo_%2..._phenomenon%29

Occurs when moon or sunlight hits ice crystals in thin high altitude clouds.
