The Moons of July 2011

Hi everyone,

Last month during Brisbane's fine weather and starting 2nd July, I managed to image the moon every day except for Full, the day after Full, and one day before New, throughout its orbit. The days I couldn't get were due to cloud. Each of these was taken with a Canon EOS 550D at prime focus of a 12" Sky-Watcher Dobsonian, untracked.

My work schedule of evenings, mornings and night shifts, the weather, and the flexibility of setting up the scope and taking the shot in 5 minutes or less, all conspired to allow me time and opportunity to get these images.

There are many ways of exhibiting the month of Moons, and this is one of them

Thanks for looking.

Tom

Wow, nice work Tom. Is that what you would call a moonathon?
Very nice presentation.

Thanks everyone. It all started with the 1 day old Moon (as it must I guess! ). Once I had photographed it and the next two days I had the feeling I may just be able to catch the entire month. Every day I took the opportunity to shoot. The importance of getting the shot everyday grew as the month went on. Even missing two days around Full Moon due rain/cloud made me consider giving up the run, but I thought it wouldn't affect the overall picture and kept going. The day before New Moon was the morning I did that HST/Jupiter transit. That morning I was about as excited to capture transit as I was the Moon. Just one bank of cloud where the Moon was saw and end to the sequence.

I took about 10 frames each for most days and the resulting images provide alot of scope for comparison of different monthly lunar events/aspects. I would like to do an animation showing libration and apparent size changes throughout the month.

Cheers,

Tom

Hi Tom

I admire your persistence and stamina in collecting the individual frames – a marathon effort indeed! I love the presentation as well – a terrific job all round.

You seem to enjoy picking all the challenging jobs!

Cheers

Dennis

Super effort Tom!

Has all the hallmarks of being a very nice print if you were to print it and frame it.
