Son's Photography excursion results.

My son is currently doing a film and media course in Brisbane, and occasionally use some interesting gear.Recently he came home, and wanted to try and bag a few images for a comp, and may be do some images for post cards and book marks which he sells to visitors to our day tours on the property.

Well, the weather was awful, very cloudy with rain patches. We drove around property to a few locations that I knew might harbour something interesting,Grey Kangaroos are like mice here,so thankfully they let us get close.

The Jacky Winter (grey robin like bird) was always on the hope, but he bagged this image -with lovely bokeh (I'd like to see Rowan Atkinson saying that word). And Bonus points right at the end of the excursion with a Varied Sittella (10 cm) long.Tiny little bird that climbs around trees, often upside down.

He really got into the 'zone' with some of these photography sessions particularly the Sittella. Also included an image I took of him taking the Jacky Winter image-yes,people are amazed at how close you have to get with a 400 mm lens,If your more than 10 metres away from a bird this size, forget it.

Hope this are of interest, any feed back or critique would be helpful for him.

cheers Chris

Very nice indeed, love the first one especially, not much of a roo fan though.

Nice shots. I suspect that 400mm L series lens of yours is so forgiving that it is
hard to go too wrong.

re images

Thanks for your feed back,Joel is enjoying D/SLR photography more and more.

Yes,Leon-not a fan of roo's either, but these were the first photography menu items on the day,and if all else failed,he'd have some images.

These 4 images he entered into the comp, and has just won 1st with the roo's and 2nd with Jacky winter.Out of 35 entries, all were of a very high standard, and most taken by people twice his age,and with gear that cost twice as much (lots of Nikon D7000 around Blackbutt top Nikor lenes).

Joel has done well indeed. I especially like the Jacky Winter and the second one of the Sitella.

Thanks Paddy, will pass that on.As mentioned these images were submitted into a comp.Which we rarely do.but interesting to get feed back from other sources. The Varied sittella, did not score well at all,as I thought. As the judges thought it was 'upside down'. But the image has been very well received in more 'scientific' forums and people who understand these little 'bark peckers'.

The comp was run to national standards,so was interesting to see how it worked-the scores over 20 were very difficult to achieve, with 27 the max.

Joel did well with a first with Kangaroo, and second with J.W,all others who have seen, said they prefered th J.W.All in all a learning experience. And Joel put the cash prize towards the Canon 600D I just bought him from DWI.Along with the 28-135 mm lens I purchase in IIS classifieds-will get him started-think he might be keen for a 100-400 L like you got Paddy.

How is your friend going with the 50-500 Sigma lens,Paddy?-you mentioned he bought it around the same time as you got your 100-400-and have you done any comparative testing?

cheers Chris
