LED lighting

hello members
i have a friend who owns a business on LED lighting so i went to see him because i wanted to changeover my shop to LED instead of halogens and metal halides. The power savings are enormous. A 50w halogen becomes an 8w LED and i have 34 of them, and a 23w LED will replace a 150w metal halide and i have 7 of these.
Anyhow to cut a short story long something caught my eye in his showroom and it was an LED street light. So after telling him about astronomy and light pollution i asked him if the light from it actually went down to the floor where it is supposed to go, rather than the normal "supernova" lighting that just goes everywher except the ground. So this is exactly what they do, and the icing on the cake is that they can be equipped with a sensor that brightens the light from 60w to 120w when a car or pedestrian is in proximity! brilliant! You would get a "rolling" light as the car goes through and then it will dim down to half when not in use
It would be fantastic if all councils would adopt this lighting, the savings, and of course the green benefits would be enormous. We may even get down anothe couple of magnitudes in inner city

I whole heatedly agree

I totally agree Pat. Coping with this addiction whilst living in the light polluted inner west of Sydney can be very frustrating at times. Not to mention I probably have an enourmous carbon footprint myself what with all the travelling I do to avoid said light pollution.
