Quake M6.2 - 57km SSW of Opunake, New Zealand

2012-07-03 22:36:16 NZ time. About 60 miles offshore.

Any of our NZ members know anything? USGS reckon it should have been felt over most of the shaky isles. GA report.

GeoNet NZ report it as mag 7.0 and felt from Bay of Plenty to Canterbury.

She was a goodie. Heard it long before the shaking started. No reports of any damage except for maybe the odd pinot spilled. Geonet report it as a mag 7.

Nothing felt in Auckland. It was 240 km deep out in the ocean about 140km Nth of Wellington. Christchurch had a couple of bumps at 3 or so as well about the same time.

But take a look at this site for earthquakes in the last 100 years (or so). Picture may not show in middle white box but if you click inside the area it will take you to a big jpg of it all.

Glad every one is ok .
I was in the Edgecombe earthquake in 1987 ( working at the dairy factory in Edgecombe at the time it hit about 1.30pm ) and I never want to go thru that again , scary stuff .
The reason nobody was killed , was because there was a small tremmor before the main quake hit and the whole site was at the assembly pionts when it struck , the whole place fell just over , people would have been killed easily .

A friend in Wellington said it was disconcerting but not too much to worry about. Knocked a few CD's off the shelf. Good thing it was such a deep quake.
