Australia's carbon tax won't start till next year so I don't know you may be being ripped off by the seller and books would not attract any type of carbon tax so I think the seller would be open to challenge in court.

Carbon neutral shipping. What a croc of s||t. Yep... the BS has truly started. Maybe you'll get it in 6 months coz the only CO2 friendly shipping will be by raw boat.

Warren it was an interesting link and I think this is why they do it

It is only a few pennies per book, but when thousands of people do it every day it adds up.

Which is worse in the long term enviromentally... buying a book made of paper and reading it, or spending the time online (or reading an ebook)? At the end of the day the book should be biodegradeable to some extent... not sure about the laptop or ipad (and all the electricity too)...
I am not going either way... just throwing it out for thought.

I've bought books from BWB in the past. Even a couple of years ago, they were charging a tiny levy for carbon neutrality, so it's not a new thing.

Also, they have the best order confirmation emails.

A book fixes carbon so I'm not sure why they'd charge.
I had an idea that they should get that weed that grows by 100% a day in creeks and just fish out half every day and take it out to the Simpson desert where it can sit for 10,000 years as dry as.

Offsetting your carbon is good there's lots of other things we should consider when we doing things. Where does your veggie oil come from and what not. thinking about your impact on the earth and those around is a very old tradition, Man has lived this way for most of our history.

The flat Earthers will go off, hell we'd all still be using asbestos, DDT and sucking down fags if they had their way.

Or we would still have the freedom of choice to do those things. Good thing the goverment is here to do our thinking for us though. Saves us having to make those pesky choices.

Totally agree, left to our own devices without regulations most of us do only what's the easiest and makes us the most money, regardless of its impact on the environment and the health of others.

People bag governments and scream their right to low taxes, free will and natural selection...until of course there is a crisis either economic or natural when they then expect the government to bail them out.

Good on the book store , even if its efforts are negligible in the big scheme of things hopefully the sentiment will be infectious

What a crock. We are no longer allowed to make any decisions ourselves. We must be regulated comrad.

IMO Carbon offset is mostly a scam, the offset is usually produced by investment in plantations, most often planted on land that has been previously stripped of native forest, if not that, planted on valuable farm land, in the case of Australia, subsidized by the taxpayer in the form of MIS schemes.

The dollars you elect to spend on "carbon offset" are most likely going to large multi-national companies who are buying up land worldwide at your expense. In an ever expanding world only two things are really important, land and water. Do some research, you'll be alarmed to find just how much of this country's land and resources are already in foreign ownership.

Don't get the wrong impression, I'm firmly in the climate change believer category, but the solutions to date are too simplistic and designed simply to harvest public money at the same time delivering no or small outcomes. When the authorities start making decisions and adopting measures that make a real difference I'll be more than happy to pay.

Of course we are allowed to make these choices ourselves but it is like the frog in water that is brought to the boil slowly they will just sit there until they die but if they are put in boiling water they jump out. Please don't do this experiment some nasty person has already done it that is how we know the result.

It is wonderful to see people considering their personal impact.

I worry that tax and Government can solve problems given the track record on crime, drunkeness, drugs or domestic violence to name a few.

The tree planting in my area was a joke... good river flat land gone to a forest that no animal can live in..none of these forest get maintained properly..the tree companies went broke ...I love forests (I live in one) but mono culture (plantation forests, palm oil etc, is not good for any reason other than a for commercial return.)

AND looking at the expensive toys (hot cars boats planes etc) it seems some will carry on with little regard to how their behaviour impacts...tax probably has little impact on someone bent on racing.

But actions such as these book folk do focus attention and that cant be all bad.

I think planing to live in a future where nothing has been achieved is realistic... I wonder what that world will be like.
