I love this

I love this image:
http://media.skysurvey.org/openzoom.html
Look at all those nebulae!
ZOOM in.

And I would like one of these 2.6m scopes too:
http://www.eso.org/public/teles-inst...copes/vst.html
With a total field of view of 1°x 1°, twice as broad as the full Moon
and a huge (16k x 16k pixels) CCD camera

The size of the Vela SN remnant is

The Vela SN was only 800 light years away.
And there was another SN there, Vela Junior, that was visible in 1250 AD.
Did the aborigines leave a record of it?

It's fun to zoom in and find your favourite objects - took me a few minutes to realise I could click and drag to see the sides of the image.
