True colour sun...

At the risk of providing information on how to suck eggs, I've re-processed
a recent H-alpha solar image to give a "true colour" view.

The link is here

Emissions from the solar chromosphere are dominated by the light of hydogen-alpha. Through the eyepiece it's a sublime deep red colour...which is extremely monochromatic, and is beyond the gamut of any currently available computer screen, but the above will hopefully give you an appreciation of its hue.

Human eyes aren't great at picking up subtle contrast changes at this end of the spectrum, and as the signal is effectively monochrome, many choose to display this image in a colour further up the spectrum.

Yep that is close to what I see in the eyepiece.

Excellant detail Peter!

I also like the quick facts that are posted occassionally such as this where I learn something new nearly everyday. Thanks for this little extra!

Cheers,
Darrin...

As commented this is the sort of thing that makes this site great.
Spectacular images and explanations of what how when and why.
Can't help but keep coming back for more.

Thanks for showing that.

Nico.
