NGC/IC Project Web Site

It seems that the NGC/IC Project Web Site Run by Bob Erdmann and Harold Corwin is now closed down which is a shame as I have contributed to and used this site for a long time.
I hope it can be revived but it looks doubtful.

Unhappy You've gotta pick a pocket or too...

Yeah you are right, according to Wolfgang Steinicke, which was written April 2008.

"It is sad to tell, that all my data are no longer presented at the NGC/IC Project website. This is due to a conflict with webmaster Bob Erdman, who has terminated his activities for the project last year. His "Historically Corrected NGC", first presented on the project website in April 2006, is a mere copy of my "Historic NGC" which is evident by an overwhelming amount of facts. The necessary acknowledgment is still missing."

See http://www.klima-luft.de/steinicke/n...000/Explan.htm

Basically it looks like the backbone of the site was just withdrawn. (and rumour says there maybe some alleged difficult legal issues as well.)

Pity it was a great resource on the Web, which seemingly took some significant effort to keep and maintain. It will be missed - but like everything - nothing lasts forever. RIP.
NOTE: I also believe this announcement and question was made in the somewhat quirky American Amastro group.

That is very sad indeed a wonderful site and resource. Hmmm, I wonder if they did work on the site voluntarily and / or if funding has run out that supported it, as seems to be the case on some other astro work i recently read about. Two favourites sayings from movies - Show Me The Money and Somethings Gotta Give.

Ngc/ic ??

Hi All,

Yep, it will be sorely missed. One of the best things on the site was Steve Gottlieb's observing notes thorugh 8, 13 and 17.5" 'scopes. Having observed with Steve before, I know him to be a very experienced, thorough and systematic observer with a great eye for detail who wrote concise but meaningful notes.

I'm not certain but, I believe Steve's is the second largest observing log in the world (about 6,000 entries) behind Richard Jakiel (about 10,000).

There has apparently been a lot of bad blood between Bob Erdmann and Wolfgang Steinicke for quite some time over exactly whose revised (corrected) NGC it is that appears on the site. I want no part in the debate, but I sure hope that somehow sanity will prevail and the site will be resurrected -- somehow.

Best,

Les D

Hi,
Bob Erdmann's NGC/IC site is now online once more.
He says that he has spent the last 3 years fighting Colon Cancer.(Successfully it seems)

See www.ngcicproject.org

Cheers,
Wally

Love the NGC IC project, one of my favourite sites. Excellent resource to follow up your own observations with. However it has been active for a long time now.
