I am surprised by that VLT image. Unless the web posting is very compressed.

Stars are elongated and it has gradients in the background and detail is only average. Surprising. I guess everyone has a dud day every now and then.

Greg.

These aren't Australian images, but they are amongst the very best of the Leo Triplet:
(you will have to search within these websites)

http://panther-observatory.com

http://www.sierra-remote.com
(find the image by Greg Morgan)

Large size versions of the Leo Triplet image by the VLT Survey Telescope can be found at www.eso.org
The biggest version is 483 MB !!!
Incidentally, this telescope is not the VLT ......it is a recently completed 2.6m Survey Telescope that will be used for various specialized sky surveys. Imagine a 2.6m finder telescope!!

[ A similar telescope, VISTA, will be doing a high-resolution survey of the entire southern sky]
