Televue Filters not catching thread

Hey guys,

I have a couple of Televue filters and they don't seem to be catching the thread on my eyepieces which is really disappointing as they were expensive filters.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can solve this one.

No solutions. I have an Orion filter which only just fits to my TV eyepieces. About half a turn, that's all. Bintel said its something to to with German, Taiwanese and Chinese manufacturers, but I don't get it.

I have an Orion Variable Polarising Filter which is a pain to get onto my Meade EP but goes on easily to my TeleVue EPs.

Are the filters 2 inch?
Bintel has something called a Tele Vue 2" Eyepiece Barrel Extender. I have one and it seems to slip into EPs easily as well as accepting a filter. It may or may not work and unfortunately will cost you $45 for a try. It will extend your EP tube by 3cm but this can be absorbed by your focuser. It is possible that working the extender onto your EPs might loosen up the thread. Better than damaging your filters.

Otherwise, do the filters fit in the end of a barlow which your EPs can use? This will however increase your magnification and reduce your field of view.

Hi Craig,

What eyepieces do you have which have this problem?

It is a pretty common problem to be honest and generally caused by the fact that manufacturing tolerances slip and then things don't quite work how they should. This is what Bintel were aiming at when they commented on place of manufacture.

Depending on the eyepieces, there "may" be a solution.

iv'e had the same problem as rod.the orion oIII filter i bought wouldn't thread onto any of my televue eyepieces they were having a problem with the threads i returned it and awaited the new batch and it was perfect.that may seem to be your problem-just be careful not to wreck the threads on your eyepieces...

Thanks for the replies guys, they are 1.25" filters. They are the Tele Vue Bandmate NebuStar and the Tele Vue Bandmate OIII filters, they don't fit my Celestron Plossl 32 mm or the Meade Super Plossl 26mm LP.

They do fit my Celestron 17, 13 and 10 eye pieces so maybe thats enough to hunt out the fuzzies.

try a bit of thread tape - it may pad out the threads so they work - I had to do that with an eyepiece nose and it's fine now

Superglue the filter on?

Yes, I have a range of eyepiece makes and filter makes. I'm lucky in that they all screw tigether at least a turn or so. Just one of the tribulations of mixing different makes it seems.
