Teaching Sets of Astronomy Negative Transparency Film
As mentioned on my other thread, I have a number of teaching sets of UK Schmidt film for sale. These are sets of high quality negative transparencies produced by the Royal Observatory Edinburgh from photographic plates taken at the UK Schmidt Telescope, New South Wales.
Each set contains an information booklet and 10 negative transparencies, each 45cm x 45cm and covering 5 degrees x 5 degrees. The faintest stars are about Mag 23, two million times fainter than the human eye can see! The detail is amazing. The transparencies are best viewed with a lightbox and loupe (magnifer).
The booklet gives a brief introduction to the UK Schmidt film and details on the objects found on each transparency. X-Y Coordinates (in mm)from the bottom left-hand corner of the film are provided to find these objects on the film are also given.
The collection contains many spectacular fields. A huge number of different galaxies appear in these fields and are very useful for lessons on galaxy types.
These teaching sets are an excellent resource for teaching astronomy at a high school and university level. My student astronomy club has the film on loan to members with a lightbox and has used the film to help enter the Gemini School Space Contest, coming second twice.
Each teaching set is $100 plus $20 P&H to Australian postal addresses. This is a very economical way to get a set of high quality film. The film typically sells for $15 - $35 per image (without any detailed descriptions). If purchasing for an institution, a tax invoice can be organised.
Please contact me if you have any questions.
