Post Small Tremor!!!!

Just had the house shake a bit about 2-3 minutes ago. A short sharp jolt that lasted about 2-4 seconds. Felt like a small earthquake, probably about 2-2.5 on the Richter. Hard to say, really, but we couldn't find any immediate cause for the shaking.

Wonder where the epicentre was??. Would have to be closeby, being so small. Wish I still had my geological maps for the area....there's about a dozen or more small faults around here, plus you have the major Hodgkinson-Palmerville Fault which partly runs just off the coast along here.

GA initial report

Near Bowen, QLD.
Magnitude: 5.4 (Mb)
Depth: 24 km

They ask for reports from people who felt it

Actually, GA recorded it as 5.4, and that was from the Mt Surprise seismograph....a lot closer to the epicentre than the USGS. And, in any case, what would the news lot know....if it was left upto them, it would get smaller every time they came on air to report it.

GA revised it down to 5.2 in their 16:32 update.

Who's to say it won't change some more later, in either direction.

They're only following the USGS lead.

Actually Carl, knowing what the media is like, they like sensationalism (Drama sells News) they would keep trying to raise the Magnitude.
The less the Magnitude, the less newsworthy it is

yep.

I can remember one reporter on FoxNews doing an interview when Japan was struck.

The Seismologist confirmed it as a 9.0 and she kept getting excited and saying "but it could be a 9.5" and he would say "no" and she would keep repeating "but it could've been", until he finally said "yes, it possibly could have been, but it wasn't"

Then after she had finished the interview she very seriously faced the camera and said "There you have it, and now some video of the resulting horror of that terrible earthquake measured at a possible 9.5 magnitude"

That's why I hardly watch TV news anymore. It's not worth the effort and you don't get the facts...all you get is the fantasy.

We didn't feel it we were in the car at the time. But I had to laugh our 20 year old was at home at the time and he hunted the dogs as he thought they were scratching fleas under the kitchen table.

Exclamation

If you felt this earthquake, you can describe it and it will be logged into the USGS system.

Gosh, you guys must have really wondered "what tha" heck is going on!
Not everyday you get to experience an earthquake.

Oh dear, I really think Queensland has had enough now. Well said there Ric - never a dull moment in Queensland it seems. Let's hope all these disasters of late have now finally come to a stop.

What's weird is seeing the postings here of some of you'll wondering what's going on before it became news. How often does that happen..

Did it moves cups and plates? Cushions fall over? What did you experience?
Strawb got woken up from a snooze so I'm guessing his bed shook From the quake
