A tragic accident that should never have happened. The WH&S officers running the labs should have their knuckles severely rapped over this. If not fired from their jobs....anywhere else there is large machinery like wood/metal lathes being used, anyone with long hair is required to wear a hair net covering their hair. The machines can be dangerous enough without making the situation of using them even more precarious. In any case, people who are unskilled or inexperienced in using this equipment should, under no circumstances, be allowed to use it after hours and/or unaccompanied by an experienced operator. It's just asking for trouble doing so.
I can see a potentially huge lawsuit coming out of this tragedy.
Terrible news ..OHAS to me these days often seems more about paper compliance and risk matrixes rather than a genuine desire to make a safe work enviroment .. this young lady deserved much better than this by all concerned.
