New York - B&H Photography

Have just come back from B&H Photography on West 34th Street in New York. Simply the most amazing camera store I have ever seen. Run by Hasidic Jews it is simply the most amazing shopping experience I have ever had.

One retail store but the business has 1700 staff - 1700!!!!!

Bought a tripod for $28 because I had to leave mine at home. Could have shopped till every cent gone.

Going to another store on West 18th tomorrow that specialises in astro gear.

New York in truly an incredible place - though a good coffee is hard to find.

Hope you guys are having clear skies

niko

Niko,

I have a B&H catalog permanently by my bedside (they send 'em out as a courtesy if you buy stuff from them) and the number of products in it is just incredible.

They certainly do a good business.

I must have spent every spare cent there when I lived in NYC.
Alas it was pretty much all on Canon FD gear!
It is pretty mind blowing, though. Canon at least have no less than 5 seniour people devoted to keeping B&H alone happy.
I should imagine Nikon and others have a simlar investment.

Heading to NYC in September, B&H is definitely on the list of places to see! Niko, which is the Astro shop you are going to!

Malcolm,

Adorama Cameras - 42 West 18th Street - B&H didn't have much of a range of astro gear that I could see - Adorama meant to be better. I think number 42 would put it just off 7th or maybe 8th Ave.

Also tried Alatest but when I went there it was a weird cubicle on the 8th floor - maybe they really only do mail order...?

cheers

Niko

I was going to mention Adorama, too. They've been nothing but helpful in the past! : )

I have looked at both of these shops online, there prices on ex-used gear is also very very tempting. Someday i want to visit these mega stores in person. My friend raves about a Electronic store called Frys (something like that)

Good of you to check it all out Niko, I too am going in August. You might be able to do a pamphlet, "Amateur Astronomers Guide to NYC". Better still put it all on a Tshirt.

Have you seen any stars yet though (the ones in the sky)?

Perhaps Ken could transfer the Nov. camp to NYC and we could all give the shops a hell of a thrashing.

Keep enjoying it,

Neale.
