The Arctic Ocean is warming up, icebergs are growing scarcer and in some places the seals are finding the water too hot, according to a report to the Commerce Department yesterday from Consulafft, at Bergen, Norway. Reports from fishermen, seal hunters and explorers all point to a radical change in climate conditions and hitherto unheard-of temperatures in the Arctic zone.
Exploration expeditions report that scarcely any ice has been met as far north as 81 degrees 29 minutes.
Soundings to a depth of 3,100 meters showed the gulf stream still very warm. Great masses of ice have been replaced by moraines of earth and stones, the report continued, while at many points well known glaciers have entirely disappeared.
Very few seals and no white fish are found in the eastern Arctic, while vast shoals of herring and smelts which have never before ventured so far north, are being encountered in the old seal fishing grounds.

Within a few years it is predicted that due to the ice melt the sea will rise and make most coastal cities uninhabitable.

Global warming was of course hypothesised in the late 19th century after the radiative forcing properties of CO2 and the fact that atmospheric CO2 concentrations are increasing was recognised. On that theme Isaac Asimov wrote an essay in 1959 entitled 'No More Ice Ages?'. However in 1922 it was impossible to say that AGW was occurring - even if they had had the supercomputers required to run Global Circulation Models (GCMs).

When numerous iterations of many different GCM are given the conditions in 1900 and told about changes in solar output, volcanism etc and run for 100 years, up until 1950 there is no statistical difference between iterations which account for increasing CO2, those that don't and the actual climate record. After 1950, however, instances of the GCMs that don't allow for increasing CO2 concentrations show a downward trend while those that do allow for the increase and the actual climate record both show an upward trend. Having this situation carefully explained to me (with supporting data presented) is what tipped me from believing AGW is theoretically possible but as yet unproven to believing that it has been observed.

We are indeed fortunate that we now have much more reliable, robust, and spatially and temporally complete data than a few fishermens' stories.

I could not quickly find the last thread on this subject to stir the pudding in. Besides its a great controversial subject to sling mud in. Every one knows the ice age has been retreating for 10000 years and most of the water that was taken from the seas has already been returned. But there is still some left on Greenland, Russia(siberia) Canada and Antarctica. So we can surmise as to what it can do if by some chance it all melts.

haha when it's cloudy, I prefer the odd slab or two.....

you can imagine my consumption of the happy juice reaches B-double proportions with my skies
