Where can I get a wooden Surveyor tripod with 3/8"-16 screw?

Hi,

I've been living in Sydney for almost a year but have been doing only casual observing from my balcony so far. My 4.5" scope is currently sitting on a Giro-type alt-az mount and Gitzo G1415 tripod which prohibits me from doing any high power observing. The mount that I have is capable of taking the load, so I'm thinking of replacing the tripod first with a wooden surveyor type. I've used this type of tripod before when I was living in Singapore and I quite like the setup.

Can anyone guide me on where I can get this tripod in Sydney? I tried hardware stores but with no avail.

Thanks and clear skies! (it's been cloudy the past few days)

Hi Arief,

With some luck a fellow IceInSpace member might have one for sale.

I've never used them, but here on the North Shore I drive past a surveying instrument
store at Lindfield right on the Pacific Highway that sells wooden surveyor's tripods.
The place is called Universal Instrument Services -

You might need a mod.
Most surveyors tripods have 5/8 screw thread.

The trouble with being in a different time zone is that you can't share information in real time. This is exactly the place that came to my mind when I read your post.

I've never been in the store but I've been by it many times (I used to live in the Roseville/Lindfield are).
