3rd last surviving WW1 soldier dies

Frank Buckle, the third last living soldier from World War 1 has died at the age of 110.

He joined the war at age 16 and lied about his age.

There are now only two remaining surviving veterans of World War I - both of whom are British.

Claude Choules, 109, now lives in Australia and said it was an 'honour' to be the last British man standing after Harry Patch died in July 2009. He enlisted with the Royal navy aged just 15 in 1916 and went on to serve on board the battleship HMS Revenge.

Florence Green, 110, is the world's last surviving female veteran of the First World War after serving in the Women's Royal Air Force during the conflict. She joined the Air Force at the age of 17 in 1918, where she served as a waitress. She is one of the ten oldest people in Britain, where she still lives.

I'm just wondering how many people from that generation are still alive, not just WW1 veterans. I'd say they'd number in the very, very few.

Watched a show on telly last Sunday night regarding the discovery of 100s of images of WW1 taken in a small french village.
It was amazing, and the images were funny, fresh and relaxed of the Aussie Diggers.
It was a beautiful segment, and had me in tears.

My Grandfather was an original ANZAC Gallipoli Veteran. He died in 1986 at the age of 99yrs & 7mths.

I often think of what he had seen in his life time. Apart from 2 world wars, he saw the first areoplane evolve into the 747. the beginnings of electricity, the evolution of motorised vehicles, Man on the moon.

So much happened in the world within his 100yrs of life.




My father was involved in WWII. I know that he used to drive a tank & at some stage he was a General's Aid, but nothing else.
Dad NEVER speaks about the war. Ever. His brother was killed during WWII.



Both Grand-dad & Dad were relativly old when entering the respective wars. Grand-dad was in his late 20's & Dad in his early 20's.


Mum & Dad will have their 66th wedding annaversary this yr......

Interesting, they had an interview on 2GB in Sydney tonight with his daughter. He has actually penned a book on his life "The Last of the Last"
