Queensland Events
Hi All,
Being from brissy i curious if anyone has info on any upcoming Star Parties etc. Location North Brisbane OR Near gatton/laidley/lowood
Alternatively would anyone in the coming months be interested in joining me at my mums place near laidley for a night of stargazing. I have an EQ6 12" scope and would love someone to show me how to use it properly as with all this rain Ive only gotten it out once. I have only had telescopes for around a year and never did a proper polar alignment etc. any knowledge is good knowledge. It would also be great to get to know some of you.
A BBQ would be provided to say thanks (limited), there is heaps of parking and toilet etc. sleeping will need a tent etc but there is plenty of open flat ground.
Please let me know your thoughts on this
Hatton Vale (near Laidley) is about 1 hour west of the CDB down the Warrego Highway

re observing
I have 'new moon' observing nights here on the Blackbutt Range,we have a camp oven meal. But the weather has not been good lately,I think the last one was in June 2010.
Usually only small groups of 5 or 6 people.Usually I mention it events, but cannot see us having one for some time,Its about a two hour drive NW of Brisbane.
The distance knocks many on the head, but those that come say its worth the extra drive, some stay 2 nites.

Steve, If you are willing to travel, then I would certainly recommend Chris's site - great hospitality and a stunning sky.
To answer your specific question, the AAQ have a 'Dark enough' site in that area and are planning to hold a members only crash course in observational astronomy around May.

You are welcome to come along to our meetings or Dark sky events any time as my guest, but please tell me in advance so we can make sure that you are looked after

To follow on what Jonathan has said, the Brisbane Astronomical Society in conjunction with SEQAS go to Hazeldean (Stanley River Environmental Centre... I think) up on Somerset Dam. Great venue, good facilities, plenty of power. Can't remember off-hand how much it costs, check out www.bas.asn.au for details. The site is about 1 1/2 or so from Brisbane.
Cheers

Is that the AAQ site out past Peaks Crossing you are referring to?
If so, could be let me know how I can gain access please?
Brett.

Hi Brett,
Yes, we are using that site. We go there on our club DSO nights - the contact for the next two sessions is me so you don't have to go too far to ask
PM or email me your details and I will give you a call

I guess all this talk of observing really helped bring on the foul weather
Lets hope for better luck next month...
