Another big quake in Christchurch.
Multiple deaths have now been reported.
My thoughts go out to friends in NZ.

Shuzbutt ...!!
We've lost contact with our branch down there but reports are no one hurt, about 40 staff. But it looks to have really done some major damage this time. And now fatalities .. so sad.

They stopped normal programming on channel 7 to show the broadcast. What a mess it looks. So saddening. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
The news said it struck only 5kms under the ground.

Not good news - my thoughts go with those caught up in this - I know of one family that just escaped the house before it fell off its piers, my work colleague’s sister – he got the news by mobile not long after it happened, she text him. Not a good situation to be in.

This breaks my heart.
I'm in the beginning stages of organising migration and this scares me to no end.

Very shocking quake.
Lots of hi-rise buildings have collapsed like pancakes, with scores of people trapped.
Power & gas has been cut-off to reduce risk of explosions & fires.
Cell-phone networks are choked with traffic also, so if you cannot call someone, txting is better.
NZ govt has accepted international offers of search & rescue assistence.
They have had more than 2500 aftershocks since the M7.4 quake that struck September 4 2010.
My thoughts are with our south island neighbours.

Not good news, and sorry for all concerned over there. I've tried to contact a newly-retired ex-client & friend of mine who has gone back to Christchurch to live in retirement after 30 or so years over the ditch here. I've attempted to email him to see if he and his wife Rose are OK, but no response as yet. He's up in the hills a bit at Mt Pleasant, so hopefully they're OK...
@Gary - if you're online - I guess that you felt it in Hamilton?

Let's hope no more damage is done with further aftershocks....this has already been bad enough. My condolences to the people of Christchurch.

That's terrible. Took everybody by surprise. 6.9! There were still aftershocks while they were reporting live from the scene. Hopefuly they can attend quickly to all the people still trapped. What a disaster... 2011 is not off to a good start for the region. Cyclones, floodings and now that.

Apparently there have been 10 aftershocks over mag. 5. Mag 5 is a big shake in it's own right. At 6.3 this is a smaller quake than last year but it is quite shallow and that tends to make the impact greater.
A friend returned this week from a conference in Christchurch where one of the papers was an assessment of the effect of different soil types on damage caused by the last quake. There were cases of very similar buildings close together that suffered very different amouts of damage (from nil to demolished) and it appears that the soil type could be the reason. Clay tends to suffer liquifaction and so there is damage whereas gravel tends to maintain its integrity. A geologist I just spoke to who knows the area well (been here for decades but grew up in NZ) is a bit confused by the location of the epicentre as it appears to off the fault.
Anyway, that can all be worked out later. The job at the moment is to look after the victims. I assume Australia will be sending whatever aid we can. Two disaters within a year - that's tough.
