On holiday down the far north coast of NSW at the moment. Really wanted to shoot this cool rock formation at Fingal headland. Knew where it was, but had never been there before. Headed out at 3.30-4am in the dark still to setup and tinker before sunrise.

Walking over the rocks in the dark to get there and one rolled under me, took a tumble hard, sprained finger, bruised arm, and put my back out.

Still - it was worth it

All shots are pretty much straight out of the camera (except the pano obviously)

Hard to link directly to that lightbox interface, have to do it semi-manually. But yes, it's much nicer to view.

Mate, I'm sure you'd love it down here. Not that far south of Gold Coast. Imaging conference - you could swing down one morning

Lovely shots Troy, nicely done.

My wife and I stay up at Kingscliff occasionally, and each morning walk up from Kingscliff to Fingal Head. The dolphins are usually heading up at the same time, and we watch them surfing under the headland, then walk back south as they swim back. Such a beautiful spot.

Hi Troy,

Some great images and the panorama and predawn images are among the best
I have seen posted here this year.

Last week a friend trying to get a shot by the water here in Sydney reported he
slipped and fractured a bone. Thankfully he managed to save the camera.

All in the pursuit of art.

Fingal Heads and Fingal Dawn! Lovely mate! Good on yer for motivating and pushing on to get the shots.

I love to hear how people are getting off their backsides to do this kind of thing. It's not just the photo, it's all the other little things along the way to be experienced and enjoyed. Bravo Troy!

Thanks very much guys. Getting used to these GND filters. These shots, except the lighthouse one, were taken with a 3 stop reverse GND filter to tame the exposure of the sky and a 3 stop ND filter as well to get the slower exposure times I wanted.

Looking back at them, though, they look a little dark? Or are they alright? Bit hard with those rocks - basalt is very dark gray obviously and near enough to black in that light I suppose.

I did a similar thing on holidays at Yamba, albeit without the fall. Great fun to get out in the early morning long before the rest of the world is moving. I posted the recently under Yamba Holiday Snaps.

I bought a 9 stop ND filter which really slows down the exposures!!

They're not dark at all.

To me, it's part of the fun of using filters -- /your/ placement of the filters, sets /you/ apart from everyone else.

I tend to think of them as a signature.

Nice captures-yes doing these types of images is hard work,but well worth it.
Had a look through a few of the images on flicker,the 'Wellington Point pier 1' is very good,how the light sqiggles in the water,I've never seen that before.Well done.

You definitely should, it's beautiful there! Also, check out Flat Rock which is just a bit further south from Currumbin Rocks, tis very nice too!
