Photoshop memory issues

Can anyone help me with this error I am getting. After I stack images in DSS, I am unable to open the resulting TIFF with photoshop (the file appears to be about 120Mb). It gives an error saying:

"Could not complete the Open command because there is not enough memory."

I am not running any other programs, I am using an Intel iMac with 3Gb RAM - of which I am letting PS use 1.5 gig (in PS preferences). The only other thing I can think of that might impact it is that I have a virtual machine (VMWARE Fusion) running Windows 7 on this machine - but it is not running when I try to open the TIFF.

I have resorted to stacking manually in PS - but it is a chore....any help appreciated

Adam
