Mount 10" collapsible Skywatcher to EQ-G

I would like input for my attempt to mount the 10" collapsible Skywatcher to the Atlas EQ-G. So far, I have 4 13" Orion mounting plates that will be welded together to form 2 plates each approximately 26" long. One plate for the scope mount and the other for the mounting rings at the top of the scope. That 26" distance would allow the attachment of 2 Orion (298mm) rings at the primary mirror end of the scope (near the balance point) and 1 (298mm) ring at the front where the secondary mirror is. I am hoping this configuration will work, but one of the problems is that the 298mm rings are about 1/2" too large for the scope. Any ideas of what I could shim the rings with?
Thanks, Paul
