Problems with iPad after iOS4.2 update

Hopefully Chris or someone else can help..

I upgraded our iPad to 4.2 yesterday, and now I have 2 issues:

1. It won't connect to the internet. From the settings, it says it's connected to my wireless network ok, but the symbol in the top left corner is missing, and trying to browse the internet says it's not connected.

2. The tilt/flip lock doesn't work anymore. Instead of stopping the orientation changing, it now acts as a mute.

Any advice?

Ok Jacob just showed me how to fix #2 - it's a new swipe thing in OS4.2 after double-clicking the button.

#1 is still a problem.

Nevermind - fixed it now.

Told it to forget the network, and then rejoined it.

It's connected now and working!

Sorry Mike - I've been out today.

Looks like you're OK anyhow. Good

Yes, the switch is a controversial step. Jobs himself wanted the change made to fall in line with iPhone/Pod practise. I think that it's a better way now that I'm used to it.

If you dont know what your missing, then you wont miss it.
I have had my Iphones all Jail broken, and would never go back.
There is NO restrictions applied to third party programmers, so your free to do more things.
If you need to ask what things, then as i said, you need to know what your missing first to understand.

One example is the Flash player. It was a Jailbreak that allowed flash content to play on the Iphone, while Steve J$bs didnt want it at all.
Also, i would like to choose what i can and cant load on my gadget.

Theo.

I'm with David. The iPhone and iPad i have work flawlessly - always have. I'm very satisfied with apps that I can buy via the usual source, knowing that they are safe to use and work as advertised and thats from a choice of over 200,000. I refuse to be potentially hijacked by malicious or poor code downloaded from some kiddie programmer factory or forced to lose apps every time the official API's are updated. An abundance of "choice" does not infer quality. Give me stability that is guaranteed and warranted by Apple so that if anything does go wrong I only have to point one finger - not multiple. You guys can have your jailbroken phones... not interested. LOL! I use my iPhone and iPad as business tools, not hack toys. My first and absolute requirement is reliability, which I would not trust to providers of software to jailbroken devices, sorry. "NO restrictions applied to third party programmers" quite frankly scares me. No thanks...

I've survived just fine without Flash. There will be Flash to HTML5 live interpreters popping up everywhere soon, so that argument is getting a bit old. Lots of previously Flash-oriented services that I used to use are also starting to drop that dependence. It won't be a problem forever.

Ok heres my take on the Apple Ipod / Iphone thing ..

I've been running an Ipod Touch 32gb for 15 months. Its basically an Iphone without the phone. The inability to run Flash sites still drives me nuts- I don't take Ipod seriously as a web device though I would like to be able to. Sorry I don't buy all the Apple/Jobs spin on this- the device can either let me access the WWW warts and all or it can't . I don't care about business - most users would be consumer level.

Performance of the touch screen drives me nuts in humid clammy weather - it is almost unusable - sorry I don't have airconditioning. It develops this problem every now and then where the sound develops a big crackle unless i move the volume slider to zero and up again- factory resetting every now and then fixes this ( a very time consuming process when you have memory full )
.

The battery is well and truly on the way out - depletes quickly and recharges quickly. I will have to buy and fit an aftermarket battery as my Gen 3 Ipod has next to no resale value now.

The other gripe is that its really hard to get it to charge from a dock unless the USB is plugged in to the computer. if I have a 3.5mm audio cable or headphones plugged in but it is not connected by USB it will fire up the music player randomly and deplete my battery. So when i have it plugged in to the lounge room stereo at forget to pull it out of the dock the battery will deplete overnight even if I have 'switched it off' as it is plugged in to audio out .

This device is far from perfect and has a number of annoying features and bugs. On the other hand i looked at a 7" screen Telstra Android device the other day for $299. I nearly smashed it after 5 minutes . The screen was laggy and I often launched icons when trying to scroll screens. Basically it was rubbish screenwise despite the Ipod clammy finger problem .

My money is still on the Ipod despite all its faults. I will upgrade next September when I've had 2 years out of it ( and give imy 32gb to some underprivelaged kid ) . I didn't need a video and camera so bad to upgrade to V4. I badly need 64gb memory - I spend hours swapping music on and off my device as it is full. Its not that I need 10 days of music - its just that when you get the feel of having so much at your finger tips - you want it all to choose from - and I am 20 gb short at the moment .

As an aside - apps - they are about 95 % gimmick for me - nifty for the first 5 minutes but mostly useless for anything in the long term ( I have 120 of them ! ) . Skype, Chess and a unit convertor are my main applications- the rest amuse me in the dog park

The newer iPod touch with iOS4.2 is a definite improvement over the previous iPod touch.

Flash has never really bothered me, but I don't use an iDevice as my primary browser anyway. (always on the laptop on the train)

Same experience here with Android tablets, scrolling was imprecise and I kept accidentally selecting & launching icons when swiping past them.

Oh well, this forum isn't here to discuss the merits of the platforms, but those of the astronomy-related applications we all want to hear about. Sorry about the hijack Mike.
