Ebay fever

Just watched a 38 bid war from 1 cent to $310 to buy a new coffee maker. Plus $20 shipping makes that $330. Definitely cheaper than recommended retail price of $369.

But I just ordered the same one new for $309 (including delivery) from an online store - and there are other online stores selling this machine within a few $s of this price.

Go figure!

Ebay has changed a lot since it's inception. It has gone from a cheap option mostly new manufacturers getting their products know to a first line shopping method.

Sellers know this now and can inflate prices as I have noticed too because many people couldn't be bothered searching anymore.

Ebay fees have also set this in motion as well, You have to use Paypal as an option so to cover fees you have to inflate prices. PayPal combined with Ebay fees are now a lot higher than my merchant facility.

It can be very addictive.
And you do things that you wish had an UNDO button attached.

I have even heard of people buying something interstate that is pick up only, when they have no way to pick it up !!!

thanks again Erick

I've been on a big kick, lately.

Looking for a second hand 5D and a 1Ds Mark II.

Bought some more photography books full of landscape pictures. Another 5 or 6 in the pipeline. I don't know why I do it -- I never have time to read through them, anyway!

Only have one item pending now - a mega bag of eyepiece caps and plugs on its way from the USA. Looking for it every day in the post - no joy yet

For a start, I'm swapping over all the 2" Televue ones - they just rip up the pluck foam in my case

Yeah but they got a "winning feeling" - you didn't; just more money left in your account

ps. I wasn't bidding, just observing. I had already ordered the new one and was searching for accessories when I came across the auction.

I have seen used items on eBay for more than the new online price. Just ridiculous.

Some people go stupid on ebay and pay prices well over market value (this applies particularly to camera gear), I don't buy much on ebay, usually buy it now stuff, for example I bought a Manfrotto fluid head for much less than any online proce I could find, the same applies for my Colorminki, hundreds of dollars under the best online price I could find in OZ.

There are still bargains to be had, you just need to be aware of the value of the product you're bidding on and don't overdo it.

Yes, coffee, but it comes in individual pods. Was looking for a stand to tastefully display the pods! But the prices were too high.

I've lost interest in bidding. I "Buy it now" or pass these days.

Ditto

But you now have to watch the "Buy it now" prices carefully.
I always do a Google search to check online/retail prices against the eBay prices.
And watch the postage costs, some US sellers are charging way over what's reasonable.

My Christmas present from my wife arrived yesterday:
Phil Harrington's new book "Cosmic Challenge: The Ultimate Observing List for Amateurs"
on eBay, ex the UK, for <$50 delivered, currently $82.95 in Angus & Robertsons.
Had a quick peek before I handed it over to be wrapped, looks great!

Cheers
Chris

I sold a motorbike on eBay a couple of years ago. 7 day auction 10 mins to go price went from 350 to 1400. I was happy as I would have let it go for 350 as it needed an engine rebuild.

I "buy it now" or go to the sellers online store and sometimes even pick it up cheaper still.

Hi,

What do you think about warranty and return issues? That sometimes moves me to buy from a shop retailer, even paying a bit more.

Cheers
