I've never had this happen, but it may help to mention what OS you're using (Win/Mac), what version of FF you have, and any addons you have installed.

I disabled my sidebar add-on and can't seem to replicate your problem.

If you want, try the "All-in-One Sidebar", it controls everything with respect to the sidebar and also includes additional features for inspecting/interrogating web pages. I've been using it for years and it works flawlessly.

I know that using "CTRL-B" allows you to open and close the bookmarks sidebar but I don't know why it would stay open when you open/close FF.

I've checked through the "about:config". Can't find anything that would affect the default behavior of the sidebar.
