Jupiter processing objective.

Hi All,

I haven't taken any images but I have spent a load of time trying to perfect processing techniques.

I am using a webcam using SharpCap to capture whichi feel is the best package I have ever used. Virtudub come a very close second to capture but come a first for processing and cleaning my captures.

After spending about 16 hours on one image I managed to get an improvement so I have a series of images that detail what I have done.

Firstly I would like to say that RGB splitting and webcam capture really was not worth the trouble. It is best to leave the RGB for mono cameras with filters in front. I may see if that is possible with the webcam with saturation turned off but in the meantime I am working on refining and getting use to the new method.

One of the most interesting things I had done was to take a 800x600 capture and use Virtudub and resize the result capture to double its size. I am still going to work on this to see if I can improve it as there is in total 5 methods of resizing in VirualDub and I have only tried one. Instead of saving it to another AVI of extracted each frame as a BMP.

I then used ppmcentre to centre Jupiter in the middle of each BMP and reduced its size to 640 x 480 (Should have done 480 x 480). Unfortunately no moon in the shot.

With the new size I am struggling to use Registax, Wasn't loading all the images and was getting registration marks on the final image, not sure why at this stage so I went back to AVIStack. AVIStack has a similar problem but has a feature to load a directory which worked. I spent a lot of time on this issue. The final image is quite good overall especially when reduced back to 800x600. An improvement over the original 800 x 600 image.

I also split into seperate Red, Green and Blue BMP tried to process these but in most did not work out well. What did work reasonably but still need improvment was to split the colour image and refine each colour individually - Matching histogram mostly. I then recombined the colours back all using GIMP. I tried using Astra Image software but was struggling with the RGB combining and gave it a miss. I will try using that when I start capturing filtered AVI's

Well that is a mouthful, I am hoping that someone will get some benefit for it. Most of what I covered here is in the article - http://www.iceinspace.com.au/63-306-0-0-1-0.html by Mike. Only a few changes, including resizing the AVI to double, Splitting colour to RGB and not Registaxing it.

Images;
  1. Original capture processed quickly.
  2. Stacked and Proceesed colour image only double size.
  3. Double Sized Processed colour, RGB split, adjusted and recombined.
  4. 3 then reduced back to original capture size
Hopefully now I will go back to capturing but still have a lot of cleaning up to do.

Cheers all

Thanks Clayton,

It says a lot of processing and trying to get it right, all of them are from the save AVI. I kinda like it too

Thanks for sharing that Malcolm. Certainly makes a big difference to the final result.
