Question DIY #505 USB autostar cable

I know it easy to make one of the #505 cables, but with it becoming rarer for serial connections on desktops and laptops these days, can you just wire up a rj11 straight to a USB instead of worrying about a serial/USB adapter. It seems like it might work if wired correctly...

Looks like with further investigation you still need a RS232 convertor.

Check the Dontronics website for the FTDI USB/Serial chip TTL converter (make sure you know which voltage level you require) - makes it easy to do it!
