Jupiter Sept 26th 2010, finally in descent seeing

Hi All,

Imaged Jupiter last night, there was a considerable amount of cloud passing through but I did find one hole that lasted long enough for one RGB & IR data set.

The seeing was good, well it was at the lowest level that I would rate as good, about 7 to 7.5/10.

The GRS & oval BA are close to mid transit and there is much detail to see in this region.

I don't normally post the individual channels but in this instance I have attached the RGB & 807nm IR as well as the individual R, G & B channels.

Thanks for looking.
Regards
Trevor

PS: the UTC date doesn't change until mid morning so as far as the UTC date is concerned, images after midnight are still on our previous days date relative to local time.

Thanks Clayton, I was most pleasantly surprised looking at the live feed, I was begining to think I just wasnt going to get a crack at Jup in decent seeing. As it turned out, over a 3 hr period there was only one hole in the cloud large enough for a full data set.

Thanks Lester, sorry to hear about your exceptionally bad run with the cloud. Just looking at the GFS charts and next Friday, Saturday look promising for both of us, hope it is clear for you.

Nice images again Trevor. We have clear skies at the moment in Brisbane, so I'm hoping to have a bit of a look at Jupiter this evening (although they are forecasting light rain o/n - hopefully that will be in a few hours...)

Cheers,
Stephen

Hi Trevor
The colour image is great - so much detail - I appreciate your plethora of images - I have not viewed or imaged Jupiter for ages due to life!

Wonderful image Trevor; you managed to capture the white ring around the GRS, many swirls within the NEB and the ovals in the South Polar Region. Those are the first things I look for and you've recorded them in fine detail.

Thanks very much Matt, Jup is heading North and each year from now on it will become less favorable for us as we will be imaging it at ever lower alt. The view are currently presented with is the best we will see for several years.

Thanks David, I have been experimenting for some time with the colour balance for Jup and I am pretty happy with this.

Thanks very much Peter, must say just how pleasantly surprised I was when looking at the live feed for this data set.

For someone wanting to improve like me it is interesting to see different channels, the green best out of the 3 colours but the IR from you is always impressive for finest markings. Hope my 742nm filter delivers when cloud finally goes.

John.

Thanks John, the quality of the R, G & B channels is a pretty fair indication of the seeing. Often in mediocre seeing the R channel will be the best but it is the G & B channels that really tell the story. In decent seeing the G channel is the best and as it gets even better, then really nice detail becomes visible in the B channel.

I am sure you will be very happy with your 742nm IR filter, I have seen many imagers on various forums produce really nice images with it. You will find that both Jupiter and Mars both respond very nicely to IR imaging, especially at low alts.

Thanks Doug, just thought it might be interesting to post the 3 data sets that produced the final image.
