Pitch: Gugolz and alternatives?

Hi all grinders and polishers,

I am currently polishing two large float-glass mirrors, (22" f5.2 and 25" f4.6). Working outside in a temperature range of approx. 8-12deg C. using Gugolz #55. Even pitch of a rating this soft acts hard in this winter outdoor invironment. However progress has been good with the 22" fully polished out with cerium oxide (the figuring stages to be completed with red rouge followed with black rouge to get that ultra smooth finish).

My question is: What pitch is your favourite (ie Gugolz #55, #64, #73 , #82, or do you use an alternative pitch or pitch substitute), and at what temperature is the invironment in which you work? Inside or outside?

I prefer out ( in a grass yard), so water and general mess spilt about is a non issue.

Looking forward to your feedback. Thankyou in advance.

Stephen.

Good to hear big mirrors are being hand crafted!

I use a pine resin, soften it with vegetable oil, When I make big diameter polishing tools its ok for it to be pretty soft i think. so much surface area.

I have made a few 490mm f/D 4.5s
good on you,
Brett

Get Acculap (the synthetic pitch). Consistent, odorless, colorless, predictable, reusable.
You will never look back. I certainly never have.
