F-111 swansong, Riverfire 2010

Hi all,

Here are a few images of Riverfire last night. This was the final dump-and-burn before the F-111s are retired on December 3rd this year. It was great to have the opportunity to see them one last time! These shots were taken from a vantage point about 10 km from the action, using my 70-300mm telephoto.

Thanks for looking!

Cheers,
Stephen

re f111

Without a shadow of doubt,no 1 is best photo I have ever seen of a dump and burn over Brisbane,Well done, very clever photography-you are one very advanced and clever photographer StephenM,certainly the most impressive photos on this forum mostly come from you.

I hope you run lectures and tutorials one day in Brisbane,so some can learn from you.

RE-F111,very sad to see them go,such ashame,I think F111 and Concordes are the best planes ever made.

Cheers Chris

Thanks very much Chris - although I think you're exaggerating a bit! I've seen better dump and burn shots, but I was happy with how this one came out.

I agree that it will be a shame to have no F-111s next year - Riverfire will not be the same without them . Surely it can't be too hard to re-configure the Super Hornets so the fuel dump is located adjacent to the engine...? ( )

Cheers,
Stephen

Shot number 1 is actually of cosmic hockey stick.

The framing is superlative -- with the bulge of the trees rising towards the centre, and the scattered buildings falling into place just nicely, and the hockey stick taking left-stage.

Great work, Stephen.

Thanks very much for the comments Chris and Humayun!

I like the "cosmic hockey stick" idea, H!

Great shot Stephen. That was a one time setup, either it was gonna come out great or no good. Well done.

Greg.

Thanks Greg! Yes, there's not much opportunity to test camera settings for this sort of shot. You just have to hope for the best. I did capture a second dump-and-burn about 15 minutes after this one (with identical settings), but the additional smoke from the fireworks resulted in it being horribly over-exposed.

Cheers,
Stephen

Great images Stephen!!
Looks like it would have been a wonderful night.
Have just returned from Mackay area, and thought of you whilst driving past the sugarcane south of Mount Elliot way.

OZ Aviation will pay for that shot!

Congrats, considering cloud the conditions on Sat night.

The most unforgetable double dump n burn was the opening night at Expo 88,
the two F111's approached from opposite ends of the Southbank reach at what appeared to be 300ft and performed a near perfect loop.

Yes we will all miss the F111s, but not as much as the RAAF!

BTW special F111 farewell Amberley 2-3 Dec

Thanks Liz, yes it was a fun night. Had both the kids with me, and they only bumped the tripod once while I was taking shots!

Ah yes, Mt Elliott and the sugarcane fields. Hopefully I'll be back there some time in the next few months.

Cheers,
Stephen

I'll mark that in the calendar! Do you have any more details about what's involved? I'm guessing there will be a fly-past or 2?

Cheers,
Stephen

Chris, have a look here for the Dec 2/3 details. It's still a bit vague at the moment, but hopefully more detrails will appear closer to the event. I'd certainly like to capture them one last time!

Cheers,
Stephen
