another old moon shot

messin around with old shots again
two large files around 1MB each - same pic - one colour, one greyscale
taken afocal with nikon cp 4500/WO 24mm ep/ 1/59 sec/ISO 100 f7 10" dob/newt in july last year - single shot - focused with lcd on back
some unsharp mask - and some levels in the greyscale version
2272x1704 pixels in size - watch it you firefox users with auto resizing to screen hehe

does anyone else hold the view that full disc moon shots are unusual, in as much as that the main thing is resolution and when you reduce for web you lose the main objective? maybe defeating the purpose? whereas i cant think of another type of astro shot were that is as critical? i mean it will be a long time before planetary imagers will have that problem with image size being still relatively small with webcams
which do you prefer colour or greyscale? - i find i lose some detail in the dimmer areas with greyscale - while it brings out the detail in the brighter areas - i cant make my mind up

still going to get a decent external focusing device - maybe a cheap laptop or portable dvd player - thats why i havent done anymore really since

Thankyou Paul! i agree too, the greyscale has the edge overall i think

i can do better than that with this scope/setup hopefully too, because I have seen it visually a lot better than that, routinely over the years. also i was still using the infinity setting back then, before i discovered macro! and i will use the tiff mode next opportunity too. the wo 24mm ep isnt the very greatest ep ever made - still pretty damn good tho in slow scopes- i have seen stacked shots with cp 4500 and takahashi 12mm? ep of planets thats pretty nice -also was only half hour cooldown on scope at the time oh yeah what other excuses have i got - mirror coating ten or 11 years old!!

some nice local trivia about the moon for me - its visible surface area is roughly the equivalent area size of SA love that one - my ex surveyor mate mentioned it once and it stuck in my head ever since LOL

Those are very nice.

Personnally, I love lunar images taken with CoolPix digital camera rather than ToUcam.

Thanks for posting.

awesome effort John - i was on dial up for 6 years - it feels like the eye of the proverbial needle - do you at least got near the 56k speed mark?
during one dial up era I had to send dozens and dozens of high quality scans of comets (with the ozelame 10meg email limit ) to oversea's researchers, took me years to recover from that
anyway i'm impressed and i appreciate that mate - but i wanted that flyby look that i could see on my puter -
cheers

Thankyou LT - yep an ultra close 2cm macro (minimal vignetting) fully manual/ cable/palm remote compatable 4 MP ect. is still very handy - 4500's and there predessors were the bee's knees briefly in planetary stuff for a while once - how cheap do they go on ebay these days (havent looked for while now) >3 - 400 au
maybe? good value still

Wow - what a magnificent mosaic, so clear, crisp and clean. Messier A&B and the Alpine Valley look wonderful in the larger setting of the gibbous disc - great job.

Cheers

Dennis
