Saturn 20th June 2010

Hi all, I think this is my best Saturn for the year, captured with DMK and 2x barlow with LX200 14". Conditions were very calm and seeing very steady. Could only half fill the histogram with maximum gain and 15fps.

Definitely an improvement Lester, even with the rings so closed you still have the Cassini division.

Not sure if you have the three channels properly aligned, seems to be a thin green line above the rings. Might be an idea, in Astra Image, to zoom the image and look at the rings, that is how I align my Sat images.

Also, with this orientation, as Saturn has rotated while the 3 channels were captured I would expect, maybe, a very subtle hint of a red edge on the western limb and the hint of a blue edge to the eastern limb

On CN I noticed in one of Birds comments regarding the correct colour balance for Saturn, that we should aim to have the rings white. That is not always an easy thing to do but is a good tip to try and follow.

Another thing that I look for in good Saturn images is how well defined the gap is between the planet disk and the nearly closed rings. In this image of yours, on the left hand side the gap is very well defined and has a nice sharp edge.

With my DMK I was also capturing at 15 fps with 105 sec captures per channel, the extra couple of inches of aperture gave me a healthy histogram, if there was storm structure present that allowed it to be quite well defined.

I reckon your very close to getting a top Saturn Lester, keep up the good work, the DMK is a lot different to the colour CCD.

Regards
Trevor

Thanks Clayton, Trevor and Michael for your comments, I appreciate it.

Thanks Trevor for all the info. I captured for 55 seconds per colour for this avi. I got another avi with 90 seconds per colour filter, and am processing it now.
