ED127 Focuser - a postscript

Well, the earth distinctly moved for me. North Group have agreed to send me a replacement focuser for my recently purchased ED127. Much effort required to get them to do so, but credit where it's due. The focuser is on it's way. Of course it may be that it is no better than the one it is replacing, but we will just have to wait and see.
The point is that contrary to my expectations, they will act if pushed hard enough.

Peter

I hope it's an improvement, Peter. Sounds like you deserve some good luck at present!

Cheers,

I Peter, I hope it works out better than the 1st.

I have just replaced mine with a moonlite with all the bells and whistles and am very happy with it. I didn't have any probs with the original but had only used it twice and didn't have a cam or any wieight on it. It worked better than I expected it would after reading a some of the previous posts on here about the focuser, but I replaced it any way.(I like pushing buttons)

There is prob no point but if you would like to borrow the original focuser to try/compare your more than welcome, suppose it depends on how long its going to take for the replacement to arrive. Its the CF version.

Thanks for the offer John. I have been to Moonlite also - so the replacement from NG will be recycled a little in another project.
I am building a truss frame for a 12inch Dall-Kirkham and for a focuser I have found that with a little machining the flange from an old GSO RC8 will allow me to attach this NG focuser body with it very nicely.

cheers
Peter

NG Focuser woes - Stepping into the Moonlite!

Well done Peter, those videos we took must have convinced Gilman, the original focuser was a crock of $#i%!

Did you order the same CFL config as mine 3" threaded DT plus 1" extension?

Ron has shipped my second Stepper kit for the CS focuser along with a C8 Tall Lower Flange.

So I will be Stepping into the Moonlite all the way C11, C8 & 127.

Now about that "costant shade and irrigation" you ordered, did you really mean to order that much

My NG 127's focuser is horrible !!! its like its full of sand and dieing of thirst ( DRY) . I have had it apart 3 times now ., cleaned it inside , re lubed it with white lithium grease , and tried every combo of adjustements and then some and it is either grumbly and the 10 to 1 works or smooth on the main knob and the 10 to 1 wont work , there is no happy medium .
I bit the bullet and brought Gary's FT3035 that was for sale here , and it should be here next week , Beautiful $$$$ focuser.
I will get the origonal working better tho, if its the last thing I do , such shame as the rest of the scope is Really nicely made and performs so well .
Brian.

I have replaced my refractor focuser with a JMI EV focuser, with motor drive, and it is a very nice unit indeed. My 8" SCT also has a JMI NGF focuser attached to the rear cell and it is smooth as. Although I like the Feather Touch the JMI is certainly much cheaper and has a more compact motor drive system.

Hi All,

A late addition from me, sorry as I've been offline for ages...

Going back many (new) moons ago, my new ED127 had wonderful optics but the focuser was terrible to use.
I took it apart and managed to get it working ok but not perfect..
Here's my post from back then.

A good quality aftermarket focuser is still a great option for this scope.

Cheers... Rob :-)

Well, the promised replacement arrived and it is different in several ways - first, it doesn't wobble; and second it has a brake on the shaft which the original didn't. But, to be consistent, when I opened the box, I found two of the grub screws rolling around loose in the packaging. Boy, what some quality assurance could do for this product line.

QA ? I really dont think they know the meaning of it ?
A real shame that we have to get one of these , as the rest of the scope is worth it .
Oh well , and merry Christmas .
Brian.
