My piture of Saturn (recently)

Hello:

Up here in the northern hemisphere we can see Saturn and Mars in the constellation Leo the Lion in the west after sundown.

Saturn of course is near edge-on and so it's rings are near edge-on making it look different.

Saturn1.jpg is of the Edge-on rings.

And Saturn.jpg is a yellow oval-looking glowing thing that is my attempt to photograph it when I had 1.25" eyepiece projection with my Meade and used a yellow filter. This last image was taken when the rings were at a wider and fuller phase.

Besides getting the tracking right, focus and filters does anyone else have any suggestions?

David

Hi David,

Getting the focus and the exposure right are the two major things. The tracking is not so important for the bright planets and the moon since your exposure times are so short for these objects; although it can make life a lot easier not having to keep nudging the scope to keep the object in the field of view. I started out photographing Saturn with no tracking, just using my point and shoot camera afocally with a Dob telescope.

Keep on trying, you're on your way.

cheers,
Andrew
