Favourite email program
As per previous thread, I have new laptop , that doesnt have Outlook Express .
What are your fav email programs?
Some seem to be Mozilla, Opera, Pegasus, Incredimail, Mulberry and Foxmail???
I would like a program that keeps the emails on my laptop, instead iof logging in and out .

Vista has windows Mail, MS stripped it from Win 7.
I use Windows Live mail, it's a free download, works well, even if the interface is a illogical compared to OE.
Live mail handles multiple accounts in a much better manner than did OE and has a nice filter which automatically presents unread mail from multiple accounts.
I also have Outlook 2007 as well but I find it a bit cumbersome for my simple needs.
Once you get used to the I/F Live Mail is probably a little better than Outlook Express.

Gmail!
Better than any thick client.
Fantastic spam checking/virus handling, heaps of space, heaps of features.
Access from anywhere!

Oh and you can direct your email from your ISP to your gmail account via POP3.
I have 3 different email accounts coming into one gmail account.

If you use gmail, you messages always remain on the server. So once you've read it on one computer, it will still be there when your wife logs in on any other computer.
You can even mark it as unread for her to see, or flag it with a special coloured star so she sees it.

No you don't need to log in, Windows Live Mail is a pop mail client just like OE.
Mike has a good point with Gmail, like you I just don't like webmail. If I'm on the road somewhere without my laptop and need access I can still use my ISP's webmail access.

I like Thunderbird (Mozilla).
The new version allows you to synchronise local folders with imap servers so you can have copies of email without having to log in if you are using imap. Otherwise, it still supports pop3 protocols.

Mike,
The downside to Gmail is that a lot of forums won't allow you to set up an account using a free email account such as Gmail, HotMail, Yahoo.
For the record, I have 2 Gmail and 1 Yahoo email accounts. I also have 2 BigPond accounts (1Gb account and 6Gb account).

Hi Liz,
I use Pegasus Mail http://www.pmail.com/ for my email program. It has a very good filter system and it is FREE.

Liz - here's a basic precīs of the two different ways that you can receive and store email - irrespective of the email program you ultimately choose. I use IMAP, because it lets me access ALL of my email from any place I choose to be - whether I'm on my iPhone, at work, at home or at a friends - at any time.
If you choose POP, the computer that receives a particular message is the ONLY computer you'll be able to access that particular message from.
To answer your original question, my favourite email client is Opera, as it is built in to the Opera browser, and runs as a tab within the browser. This means that this one program performs both functions at once - alleviating the need to have two programs running to perform your browsing and email tasks.
I don't use thin email clients such as Yahoo or GMail either. Their usage is not accepted by lots of institutions, and Google is known for accumulating and cataloguing data - so who's to say that GMail email isn't sifting through your private emails and cataloguing the contents for its own posterity? Mike - do you know this to be a totally false impression for sure?

POP3 vs. IMAP
Select from POP3 or IMAP email access
POP3 and IMAP Demystified
POP3 (Post Office Protocol) and IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) are two different email protocols. Both allow you to access your emails offline from your preferred email client. Most email client programs will allow either as a matter of choice.
POP3 vs. IMAP: Technology
POP3 always downloads all new emails locally to your computer.
IMAP downloads message summaries and doesn't download the entire message until you explicitly select it.
POP3 vs. IMAP: Email Inbox Display
POP3 downloads all emails into 1 mail folder called "Inbox".
IMAP preserves your folder structure in a main folder called "imap.hyperoffice.com".
POP3 vs. IMAP: Multi-Computer Access
POP3 is useful if you only access your email from one computer, since the email is typically downloaded locally (this is the default and can be changed).
IMAP allows email to be manipulated from a desktop computer at home, a workstation at the office, and a notebook computer while traveling, without the need to transfer messages or files back and forth between these computers.
POP3 vs. IMAP: Email Storage
With POP3, your emails can be automatically erased from the server after they are downloaded freeing up space in your account.
IMAP keeps all emails on the server until you erase them.

Thanks guys for help.
HAve had another go at Live, Phil, very unfriendly interface.
Downloaded Opera, Chris, having trouble finding the mail area!! Lots info on getting started in email .... will give it a rest and go back.
Henry, also DL Pegasus for a look.
Tried to download Outlook Express, but doesnt work on new computors, something to do with 64 bit from memory.
Will spend more time and see which is the easiest.
Havent checked Modzilla or The Bat guys.

Just go to gmail Liz it only downloads the headers then you choose to download the attachments if your heart desires .
How easy is that answer.
Cheers Kev.
