IC2944 - my first running chook

I got home last night from the NAS meeting and decided to have a shot of IC2944. the seeing was a tad soft, with some high cloud drifting through on occasions, and even though i focused and it was spot on the stars and neb looked soft. I think it was a pretty ordinary night

anyway i managed to sneak in 3h and 9 minutes worth of shots so here it is Processed in Pixinsight 1.6 and stacked in DSS

• the raw ugly stacked file
• the histogram slightly stretched to see what i have
• and the very ordinary result. (sorry for the smaller size but it was too large a file size to keep at 1280)

I think i need to do it again on a far better night.

Quite a nice job, bah, who cares if it isn't perfect, it's just great to see the image productivity on the up Dave, that observatory sure makes a difference huh?

I have been in serious discussion with my mum on the prospects of builiding something in the backyard of her new home in deep dark and remote.... New Lambton .....

Distict Park, the outdoor hockey and new Energy Aust stadium are only 2km away as the crow flies ...aaand two potential neighbours outdoor floodlights could become an issue.... On the up side her backyard has virtual 360deg unobstructed sky access

So I have the choice of continuing to pack and unpack and travel nearly 1hr to dark outer Kurri Kurri and back ooooor a 3min drive to New Lambton easy street located in light pollution Mecca...sigh..locating an observatory was never meant to be easy huh?

Nice shot Houghy.

Mike don't compromise on dark skies - you'll regret it.

Maybe you can do a deal with your friends at Kurri Kurri to setup a small observatory. Perhaps a removeable Sirius dome.
Just don't leave your scope there or even the mount. They don't take much to setup.

Dark skies as you know, makes everything easier. Some objects will be
out of your reach from light polluted areas unless you only do narrowband.

Even narrowband works better from dark skies. I have done Ha during moon and no moon at my dark site and there was a veyr noticeable difference and that was with a 5nm Ha filter.

I know you're absolutely right in all that you say mate but.... me dunn just 3 images this year . It's a bit like the "should I get a big scope or a smaller more managable one" debate ie how often will you use a big scope if it takes hours to setup and is heavy ......maybe the smaller one is a more productive buy....?
